Can we win against another toxic team?

2024/12/15 Edited to

... Read moreI used to dread jumping into competitive games like Rocket League. There's nothing worse than wanting to enjoy a match, only to be met with players who are just plain 'MEAN.' It felt like I was constantly asking myself, 'Can we win against another toxic team?' and the answer often depended on whether I could keep my own head straight. That's when I realized the real challenge wasn't just winning the game, but winning against a toxic mindset – both theirs and potentially my own reaction to it. For me, the first step to 'curing' that toxic mindset was a massive mental shift. Instead of focusing on what my teammates or opponents were saying, I started focusing intensely on my own game. I realized that whether I was the 'STRIKER' or trying for '15 Shots on Goal,' my performance was tied to my emotional state. If someone was being negative, I'd remind myself that my goal was to earn 'XP' and 'ACCOLADES' for myself, improve my skills, and have fun. The 'WINNER' mindset comes from within, not from external validation or avoiding mean comments. Another crucial strategy, especially in games where communication can be instant and harsh, is knowing when to use the mute button. Seriously, it's a game-changer! If someone on the 'ORANGE' or 'BLUE' team starts spamming 'SORRY' sarcastically or just being outright abusive, I don't hesitate. It's not about being weak; it's about protecting my enjoyment and focus. After all, what's more important: arguing with a stranger or pulling off a 'WHAT A SAVE' that helps your team? For me, the choice is clear. I also try to actively contribute positively. If I see a good play, I'll use a quick positive chat like 'Nice Shot!' or 'Great Pass!' Being a 'PLAYMAKER' or an 'ENFORCER' isn't just about scoring; it's about encouraging your team. It’s amazing how a positive attitude, even from one player, can sometimes turn the tide of a potentially toxic match. And sometimes, when I'm playing with my kids (yes, the #parenting tag is real!), it's a great lesson to show them how to handle frustration and rudeness with grace, not by stooping to their level. Finally, knowing when to take a break is essential. If I've had a string of bad games, or if the toxicity level feels too high, I step away. There's no shame in it. Sometimes, getting away from the screen for a few 'SECONDS REMAININ' in real life, clearing my head, and coming back later makes all the difference. Gaming should be an enjoyable escape, not a source of constant stress. By implementing these small changes, I've found that I not only enjoy my gaming sessions more, but I often perform better too. It’s like winning twice: once in the game, and once against the negativity.

Guilt Is a Toxic Person’s Favorite Weapon
Toxic people love using guilt because it keeps you controlled without them having to raise their voice. They guilt-trip you for choosing yourself, for setting boundaries, even for walking away. But guilt is not love — it’s manipulation. Be careful with people who use your empathy against you.
