What do you ask in the first session as a new therapist?

2025/6/18 Edited to

... Read moreAs a new therapist, the initial session sets the foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship. It's important to create a welcoming atmosphere by gently asking how the client feels about being there and what matters most to them. You might say, "How are you feeling about being here today?" or "What feels most important for us to talk about today?" This helps center the session around the client's priorities. Sometimes clients feel nervous or quiet, so offering to guide them with questions or interactive activities can make them more comfortable. For example, ask, "Would it feel easier if I asked some questions to guide us a bit?" or "Would it be helpful to do an activity together while we get to know each other?" Getting to know your client’s comfort level is crucial. Questions like "Do you tend to open up quickly, or does it take time for you to feel comfortable?" or "Are there things that usually make you feel more supported when talking about yourself?" invite clients to share their boundaries and preferences. Explore their previous therapy experiences to understand their expectations and challenges. Asking, "Has therapy felt easy, hard, or somewhere in between before?" or "If therapy felt like it was working, what would look different in your life?" can reveal insightful information to tailor your approach. Finally, encouraging clients to recall moments they felt most like themselves can help identify strengths and values to build upon. Questions like "Can you tell me about a time when you felt most like yourself?" encourage positive reflection. Remember, the goal in your first session is to create a safe space, build rapport, and collaboratively set the stage for meaningful therapeutic work. Sharing these approaches with fellow new therapists, like in support circles, can provide encouragement and useful resources as you develop your skills.

Things that actually help with AuDHD burnout (from an AuDHD therapist)
AuDHD burnout isn’t just being tired. It’s a full-system depletion that affects energy, emotions, sensory tolerance, and executive functioning all at once. And for many women, it builds slowly over months of pushing through, masking, and managing more than your nervous system was designed to hold.
