However, from my personal experience as a therapist, the reality is much more dynamic and involved. Between sessions, therapists engage in several vital tasks that help provide the best care to clients. One important activity is reflecting on the previous session to identify what progress was made and what areas need more focus. This reflection allows therapists to adjust their approach and tailor interventions to be more effective. Additionally, therapists spend time preparing for upcoming sessions by reviewing client histories, planning therapeutic activities, or researching new techniques pertinent to a client’s needs. This preparation ensures each session is productive and aligned with clients' goals. Therapists also use this time for self-care and supervision. Engaging in self-care is crucial because the emotional labor involved in therapy can be draining. Supervision or consultation with colleagues offers a chance to discuss challenges and gain new perspectives, which ultimately benefits the clients. The humorous image referencing what people think therapists do versus what they actually do highlights a common misconception that therapists are inactive between sessions. In truth, therapists' work extends far beyond the allotted session time, encompassing a blend of mental work, planning, and personal care.
