From my own experience and conversations with fellow therapists, the initial meeting with a client is filled with anticipation and a desire to create a safe, trusting environment. One common feeling is the pressure to make a good impression while also being completely present and attentive. It's important to remember that clients are often just as nervous as you are. Being genuine, listening actively, and validating their feelings can help both you and the client relax. Preparation plays a key role in easing first-session nerves. Reviewing your client's referral information, having a clear plan about how to guide the session, and setting boundaries and confidentiality expectations upfront can provide structure and reassurance. It's also normal to experience moments of self-doubt or overthinking your responses. Many new therapists find it helpful to debrief with supervisors or peers after the session to gain perspective and build confidence. Remember, becoming comfortable in therapy sessions takes time and practice. Embracing this learning curve with patience and curiosity will ultimately make you a more empathetic and effective therapist.
