... Read moreFrom my experience as a therapist, I've observed that many women habitually silence their own feelings and needs to maintain harmony in their relationships. This pattern, often referred to as self-silencing, is deeply ingrained through societal expectations that equate being quiet and agreeable with being likable and safe. This constant suppression doesn't just affect mental well-being; it has tangible physical consequences as well. Research shows that chronic self-silencing can lead to increased plaque buildup in arteries, raising the risks of hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes. I've worked with several clients who struggled to assert themselves and expressed feeling physically unwell for reasons they couldn't initially link to their emotional patterns. In therapy sessions, focusing on helping women recognize and challenge these ingrained habits of shrinking themselves, saying yes when they want to say no, or hiding their true feelings, has been key to improving their overall health. Encouraging clients to gradually reclaim their space—both emotionally and physically—helps reduce stress and supports better cardiovascular health. Moreover, mental health care must be tailored to individual experiences rather than universal prescriptions because societal conditioning affects each person differently. Embracing one's authentic voice and needs is a powerful step toward healing, not just mentally but holistically. For anyone reading this, I encourage you to reflect on whether you often prioritize others' comfort over your own well-being and consider seeking support to break free from self-silencing patterns.
