didn’t expect so many feelings…

i’ve been trying to read more books that aren’t all exactly my normal reach. i decided a graphic memoir could be a fun way to expand, especially as it is about a child of immigrant parents, i figured i’d relate.

this book made me laugh, made me cry, i had so much fun reading this. as a child of mexican immigrants i think i can say so many of the warm sentiments and weird reservations i have at times towards my culture from childhood are here in an easy and relatable story.

i loved seeing him make it into mexico and his world come to life, and him trying to reconcile his ideas of the world and his family and mexico, with the realities of the situation. super enjoyable, definitely recommend it!!

... Read moreDiving into Pedro Martin’s graphic memoir, 'Mexikid,' was like unlocking a part of my own history, a feeling I believe many children of immigrants can deeply relate to. The initial draw was the promise of a relatable story, and it delivered so much more. This isn't just a tale; it’s a vibrant, poignant, and often laugh-out-loud funny exploration of what it means to grow up between two worlds, something that instantly resonated with my own complex 'immigrant dreams' and realities. The search for identity is a profound journey, especially for an immigrant child. We often find ourselves navigating the expectations of our parents' homeland while trying to assimilate into the new culture we call home. 'Mexikid' brilliantly portrays this delicate balance. It’s about the dreams of belonging, the longing for a clear sense of self, and the often humorous misunderstandings that arise from cultural differences. I found myself reflecting on my own childhood, recalling moments of confusion, pride, and the unique blend of traditions that shaped me. The book's depiction of the protagonist's journey to Mexico isn't just a physical trip; it's an emotional pilgrimage, a quest to bridge the gap between perceived origins and lived experience. What makes this graphic memoir so impactful is its ability to evoke a full spectrum of emotions. One moment, you're chuckling at a relatable family dynamic or a cultural faux pas, and the next, you're hit with a wave of poignancy, realizing the deeper struggles beneath the surface. It captures the essence of familial love, the sometimes-stifling yet always present connection to one's roots, and the universal experience of growing up and trying to make sense of the world. The story made me think about how our parents' dreams for us, intertwined with their own experiences, inadvertently become part of our own aspirations. Beyond the narrative, 'Mexikid' also serves as a beautiful reminder of the sensory connections to our heritage. The mention of wanting to eat Mexican treats, for instance, isn't just a casual aside; it speaks to the powerful role food plays in memory, comfort, and cultural identity. It's those small, vivid details that make the story so rich and personal. This book encouraged me to reach out to my own family, to share stories, and to cherish the intricate tapestry of our shared past. It’s a powerful testament to the idea that our 'dreams' of understanding where we come from are often fulfilled not through grand revelations, but through honest, heartfelt storytelling like this.
