In my experience working alongside female dentists and healthcare professionals, the concept of the likeability trap is all too real. Women often feel pressured to be pleasant and agreeable, even at the cost of their own authenticity and professional boundaries. This additional emotional labor — the invisible effort to manage others’ feelings while maintaining their own roles — is a significant burden that rarely gets recognized. For women in dentistry and healthcare, this emotional labor can manifest in subtle ways. For instance, female dentists might spend extra time comforting anxious patients or managing office dynamics in a way that their male counterparts do not. While these acts of kindness are commendable, the expectation that women must go above and beyond to be perceived as likable adds an unfair layer of stress. Recognizing this dynamic is crucial for both women and their colleagues in healthcare settings. Openly discussing these challenges can pave the way for more equitable work environments where professionalism isn’t sacrificed for likeability. It's also important for organizations to acknowledge emotional labor in their policies and support systems. Sharing our stories and supporting one another helps counteract the likeability trap.
