夏休み明けから2学期が始まるこの時期、特に1学期に頑張りすぎた子どもたちに変化が現れることがあります。朝起きるのが辛い、学校に行きたくない気持ちが強くなる、お腹や頭が痛くなるといった症状は、子どもが無理して頑張ってきた心と身体からのサインかもしれません。 私自身も二人の子どもの不登校を経験し、親として「どうして行けないの？」と問い詰めるのではなく、「1学期、本当によく頑張ったね」と認めることの大切さを痛感しました。頑張り屋の子どもほど、外からは分かりづらい疲れやストレスを抱えているものです。 学校での学びが遅れても焦る必要はありません。小学校6年生の夏休みにひらがな、九九、英語を学び直して中学受験に成功した子の例もありますし、中学校に行けなくても勉強は取り戻せるという励ましの言葉に救われた経験もあります。大切なのは、その子に合ったペースで進むことです。 また、不登校の期間は親や家庭の負担が増えることも多いです。塾や教材だけでなく、遠足や修学旅行など学校で経験できなかったことを補うために費用や時間がかかります。家庭によって状況は異なりますが、すべての子どもに学ぶ機会が保障されることが望まれます。 子どもが学校に行けなくなったときには、「無理しなくていいよ」と伝えるだけでなく、「今はどこからならできそう？」と一緒に考える姿勢が必要です。教室が難しいなら別室や保健室、朝がつらければ午後からの登校、家で10分からの勉強など、柔軟な対応が可能です。先生や支援者と細いつながりを残しておくことで、子どもの孤立感も和らぎます。 私たち大人も、子どもたちと共に迷いながら歩みを進めています。子どもの成長は一直線ではなく、止まったり戻ったりしながら少しずつ進みます。今の遅れは未来まで遅れているわけではありません。安心することも学びを諦めないことも、どちらも大切にしながら、子どもの小さな一歩を温かく見守りましょう。 2学期に学校に行けなくなる日があっても、その日を「0点の日」にしないでください。子どものペースを尊重し、未来に続く一歩を一緒に探していきましょう。
