How to Survive Nursing School: First Semester Tip

I can’t believe I’m halfway through my second semester now! The first semester was tough—exams, clinicals, sim captures, and paperwork all at once. My first two exams didn’t go well, but I learned from it. Here are some tips that helped me survive:

1. The “3-Times” Rule for Studying

• Before class: Preview the material, take notes, and look up anything you don’t understand.

• During class: Focus on what the instructor emphasizes. Highlight key points.

• After class: Review the material the same day to reinforce it.

2. Make a Realistic Study Schedule

For every credit, study 2-3 hours. Since English is my second language, I spend 4 hours per credit. Every second counts!

3. Practice Active Learning

Engage with the material:

• Teach others or explain concepts to reinforce your understanding. Do study group ! Start talk to your classmates ! They are fun trust me and they understand what in our shoes !

• Use practice questions to test your knowledge.

• Make mnemonics to help remember important info. E.g listen to heart valves: APT-M 2245

4. Self-Care is Key

Don’t forget to take breaks! Treat yourself after exams, whether it’s a nice meal or a movie. Relaxing helps prevent burnout.

5. Stay Positive and Keep Going

The first semester is challenging for everyone. Keep pushing forward, and remember one quote said: “Nothing is impossible. Even the word itself says, ‘I’m possible!’” You’ve got this!

... Read moreStepping into nursing school, especially that intense first semester, can feel like you're diving into the deep end! I totally get it. Beyond the fantastic tips already shared, I've found a few extra strategies that truly helped me not just tread water but actually swim strongly. Before Day One: Your Pre-Semester Prep Checklist You don't have to wait for classes to start to get a head start. Think about getting your lab coat and other essentials early. It sounds simple, but having everything ready reduces stress. I spent a weekend organizing my study table with all my textbooks, notebooks, and a comfortable chair. Knowing my learning space was set up made a huge difference. Familiarize yourself with the syllabus if it's available early – even just a quick scan helps you grasp the breadth of topics. Some schools offer orientation programs; attend them! They’re great for understanding the campus and connecting with future classmates and getting a feel for what to expect. Deep Dive into Effective Study Techniques The 3-Times Rule is gold, but let's talk about how to make active learning truly stick. Beyond just practice questions, try teaching the material to an empty room, or even your pet! If you can explain a concept simply, you truly understand it. I also heavily relied on creating my own flashcards, both physical and digital. For complex pathways or drug classifications, using a large whiteboard to draw out diagrams and erase/redraw them repeatedly was a game-changer. Don't just re-read; actively test yourself. When I felt overwhelmed with notes, I'd type out summaries on my keyboard, forcing me to condense information and identify key points, rather than just passively highlighting. Forming a study group with classmates who are just as motivated was also incredibly helpful for dissecting tough topics and quizzing each other. Navigating Clinicals: Beyond the Classroom The original article touched on clinicals, which are a cornerstone of nursing education. My biggest tip for clinicals in the first semester is to be prepared and proactive. Before each clinical day, review your patient's chart thoroughly. Understand their medical history, medications, and any specific care needs. Don't be afraid to ask questions – your clinical instructors are there to guide you. Observe everything, offer help to your peers, and take every opportunity to practice your skills, even if it's just vital signs. Remember, it's okay to feel a bit lost initially; everyone does. What matters is your willingness to learn and engage and show up ready to absorb new experiences. More on Self-Care: Keeping Your Cup Full Self-care isn't just about treating yourself after exams; it's a daily practice. I learned that scheduling short breaks throughout my study sessions was crucial. Setting a timer for 50 minutes of study, then 10 minutes off, kept me from burning out. During those 10 minutes, I'd step away from my study table, stretch, grab some water, or listen to a quick song. After particularly grueling weeks, connecting with friends over some casual drinks or a meal helped me decompress and remember there's life outside of textbooks. Celebrating small victories, like finishing a challenging assignment or acing a quiz, can significantly boost your morale. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup, and taking care of your mental and physical health is non-negotiable for success in nursing school.
