BMR represents the calories your body uses at rest to maintain essential functions like breathing and circulation, accounting for about 70% of your daily calorie burn. This makes it the largest contributor to your energy expenditure, often called your body's "base salary." NEAT includes the calories burned from activities that are not formal exercise but involve movement such as walking, cooking, and cleaning. Although it comprises only around 15% of your daily energy usage, increasing NEAT through simple lifestyle changes—like taking stairs, walking more, or standing frequently—can significantly impact your total calories burned. TEF describes the energy your body expends to digest and process food, roughly 10% of your total calorie burn. A diet rich in protein increases TEF, meaning your body uses more energy to metabolize it compared to fats or carbohydrates.
