... Read moreOkay, so you know that feeling when someone's yelling, and your brain just… hits the emergency brake? Or maybe you get that impulsive urge to yell back, but then you just freeze up? Yeah, I totally get it. My original post touched on those 'intrusive thoughts' when someone's raising their voice, especially if it's someone you care about or live with. It’s like a battle between wanting to defend yourself and just wanting the whole situation to disappear. And honestly, it can feel incredibly isolating when you're caught in that mental struggle. For the longest time, I wondered why I reacted that way. Why couldn't I just articulate my thoughts calmly, or stand my ground without feeling like I was crumbling inside? I've learned a bit about it, and it turns out, 'shutting down' when yelled at is a super common response, often called the 'freeze' response. You've probably heard of 'fight or flight,' right? Well, 'freeze' is its lesser-known cousin, and it's just as primal. When our brains perceive a threat (like someone yelling, even if it's not physically dangerous), our amygdala – the brain's alarm system – kicks in. Sometimes, it decides that fighting or running isn't the best option, so it makes us freeze. It's a survival mechanism, designed to make us less noticeable to a perceived predator, or to buy us time to figure out our next move. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s your brain trying to protect you. I remember one time, my mom was really upset about something trivial, and her voice just kept getting louder. My first thought was, 'Just say something witty! Shut her down!' But then, all the blood rushed out of my face, my chest felt tight, and my mind went completely blank. I couldn't form a single coherent sentence. It was like my body was there, but my brain had checked out. Afterwards, I'd replay the scene over and over, feeling frustrated with myself for not responding differently. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? This 'shutdown' can also happen because our nervous system gets overwhelmed. Imagine a circuit breaker: too much emotional input, and BAM, it trips. We might feel a sense of detachment, numbness, or just an inability to process information or respond logically. It's our brain trying to manage a situation that feels too big to handle in the moment. Sometimes, past experiences, especially repeated exposure to conflict or criticism, can make us more prone to this 'freeze' response. Our brains learn to anticipate and protect themselves. So, what can we do when we recognize this happening? For me, just understanding why it happens has been a huge step. It’s not that I’m weak or incapable; it’s a deeply ingrained biological response. When I feel that shutdown starting, I try to take a deep breath (or several!). If possible, I politely ask to take a break from the conversation and revisit it when things are calmer. Even a few minutes can help reset your system. Sometimes, just acknowledging internally, 'Okay, my brain is going into freeze mode, it's trying to protect me,' helps me feel less critical of myself. It's a journey to learn how to navigate these moments, but knowing you're not alone and that there's a biological basis for it can make a big difference. We're all just trying our best to cope!

The first slide introduces the topic: 'Yelling at Kids Works — But at a Cost,' promising the honest truth about its short-term and long-term effects, based on science, with a 'SAVE THIS POST!' call to action.
The second slide explains 'WHY IT WORKS,' stating that yelling triggers a child's threat response, leading to compliance. This immediate result is a powerful reward, teaching the brain 'yelling = compliance,' making it hard to stop.
The third slide details 'THE REAL COSTS' of yelling in the long run: it erodes relationships, raises the threshold for compliance, keeps children's nervous systems on alert, and models yelling as a tool.
Yelling works — but here’s what it costs 🗣️
Can I say the thing nobody wants to say out loud? Yelling works. That’s why we do it. The kids stop. They comply. And our brain registers: that worked. So the next time we’re maxed out and nothing else is landing, our brain goes right back there. But here’s what it’s costing over time. And i
