Growing up, it was known that the "swan" was the queen's animal. 🦢
As a child, we might have seen swans in the garden, especially in Europe, or some people might have seen them on TV, and we felt they were beautiful, but anyway, they were just beautiful birds.
But when I talked to many in England, I realized that swans are actually the queen's animals, and if anyone hurts a swan, there can be a penalty for going to jail!!!
Especially the Mute Swan species that is considered the property of the monarch.
This rule began in the Middle Ages, when the elite ate swans for food, but swans began to diminish daily to become rare animals, so the king set up this new rule to stop eating swans.
What if you hurt a swan?
The answer is... illegal!
Killing, injuring or catching swans may enter illegal wildlife protection networks such as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which can include a fine of up to around £5,000 or imprisonment at all (in extreme cases) and may be subject to further prosecution.
