what would you shapeshift into?

nimona by nd stevenson is a really sweet graphic novel with a lot of heart. nimona is such a rockstar of a main character and made me laugh out loud a lot. and the explosive art style was really cool, too.

king of dead things by nevin holness drops you into a magical London where a group of teenagers has to find a powerful fang before someone very evil gets her hands on it. i loved the Afro-Caribbean folklore elements and the magical rules of this world.

... Read moreI've always been drawn to stories where characters can transform, so when I picked up Nimona by ND Stevenson and King of Dead Things by Nevin Holness, I knew I was in for a treat! There’s something incredibly freeing and powerful about shapeshifters, and these two books really capture that magic in their own unique ways. Let's talk about Nimona first. If you're searching for a captivating shapeshifter character, Nimona is absolutely iconic. Her ability to transform into anything – from a dragon to a tiny mouse, and countless other shapeshifting forms – isn't just a cool power; it's central to her identity and the story's themes. I found myself completely engrossed in every shapeshifting sequence, wondering what wild form she'd take next! It's not just about the visual spectacle of her transformations, which are brilliantly illustrated in the graphic novel, but also how her shapeshifting reflects her personality – wild, unpredictable, and fiercely loyal. ND Stevenson really crafted a character who uses her powers to challenge norms and discover her boldest self, often with a devilishly witty remark. Getting to see the dynamic between her and Ballister Blackheart, an ex-knight, as she becomes his sidekick, is just pure joy. The visual storytelling in the Nimona graphic novel makes her shapeshifting scenes truly unforgettable. Then there's *King of Dead Things*, which offers a different flavor of magic and transformation. While it focuses more on magical rules and Afro-Caribbean folklore elements rather than human-to-animal shapeshifting, the idea of changing forms, or changing one's destiny, resonates throughout. The author, Nevin Holness, drops you into a magical London filled with spooky monsters and ancient legends, creating a world that feels both familiar and utterly new. I loved how the story explores different forms of friendship and the concept of found family among the teenagers trying to protect their city. The narrative is super fast-paced, keeping me on the edge of my seat as they raced against time to secure a powerful fang. The rich tapestry of Caribbean legends woven into the urban fantasy setting was a refreshing read, adding layers of depth to the magical system and the characters' struggles. Both Nimona and King of Dead Things stand out in my collection of fantasy books because they don't just present magic; they delve into what it means to belong, to find your place, and to embrace who you are, whether that involves literal shapeshifting or metaphorical transformations. If you're like me and constantly on the hunt for books with shapeshifters or just compelling fantasy adventures that challenge you to think, these two are absolute must-reads. They offer incredible character development, immersive worlds, and stories that stick with you long after you've turned the last page. My reading experience with both was nothing short of fantastic, leaving me pondering the possibilities of transformation. What kind of shapeshifter would you be?
