Crunchy Golden Onion Rings
Crunchy Golden Onion Rings 🌟🧅
Ingredients:
- 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko for extra crunch is recommended)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings from one another and set aside.
2. Make the Breading: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
3. Dunk in Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl. Take each onion ring and dip it into the buttermilk, ensuring it is fully coated.
4. Coat with Flour Mixture: After dipping in buttermilk, immediately coat the onion ring in the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour.
5. Breadcrumb Coating: After flouring, dip the onion ring back into the buttermilk for a second time, then coat it with breadcrumbs to achieve that crispy outer layer. Press lightly to ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well.
6. Heat the Oil: In a large, deep skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to submerge the onion rings about 3 inches deep. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping in a small piece of bread; if it sizzles and turns golden brown, the oil is ready.
7. Fry the Onion Rings: Carefully place a few onion rings at a time into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until they turn a beautiful golden brown.
8. Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
9. Garnish: Sprinkle with a little extra salt if desired and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce (like ranch, marinara, or spicy mayo).
