These past few days has been scorching hot 😭
Living in Puerto Rico means dealing with intense heat, especially for those of us with service dogs who rely on us for their well-being. During these scorching days, it's critical to find ways to keep our service dogs comfortable and safe. One effective method I've found involves using post-work cold water breaks along with 'no eye contact, no touch' ice protocols to help cool them down without causing overstimulation or stress. From my experience, it's crucial to avoid direct eye contact and touching when offering ice or cold water during breaks, as some service dogs can become distracted or uncomfortable. Instead, placing ice near them or providing cold water in a calm and gentle environment helps them refresh without interference. Additionally, always monitor their breathing and body language closely for signs of overheating such as excessive panting or lethargy. Being a mom and caretaker in a tropical climate reinforces how important shade, hydration, and scheduled rest breaks are. I make sure to plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day and provide plenty of shaded resting spots. Also, lightweight cooling vests can be game changers in extreme heat. For those living in or visiting Puerto Rico with service dogs, adopting these care routines helps maintain their health and energy levels. Keeping your service dog cool not only ensures their comfort but also enables them to perform their duties effectively. Remember, prevention is key—avoid heat exposure during peak sun hours and always have water and cooling options ready. Ultimately, caring for a service dog in a hot environment requires patience, attention, and some thoughtful strategies. With these tips, both you and your service dog can navigate Puerto Rico’s heat safely and comfortably.
