Doctor handwriting vs actor handwriting

2024/3/12 Edited to

... Read moreYou know that feeling, right? Staring at a doctor's note, squinting, turning it upside down, trying to decipher what looks like an ancient script. I've definitely been there, holding what felt like an 'illegible blue handwritten text' that could very well be a doctor's prescription! It’s almost a running joke, this idea that 'Doctor handwriting is bad.' But what about 'actor handwriting'? Is it really any clearer, or do we all just struggle with messy scripts sometimes? I've often wondered, 'why do doctors have bad handwriting?' It seems like a universal truth. From what I’ve gathered, it’s not that they intentionally write badly! Think about their day: seeing countless patients, rapidly jotting down notes, prescriptions, and diagnoses under immense time pressure. They're often writing complex medical terms, and honestly, who has time for perfect penmanship when there's a life to save? Plus, with the rise of digital records, many doctors probably get less practice with traditional pen and paper, making their handwritten notes even more of a rare, and sometimes perplexing, sight. I've heard stories of pharmacists becoming expert decoders, almost like an art form in itself! Now, when we talk about 'actor handwriting,' it's a different beast entirely. My own experience, and what I've seen in the theatre world, is that handwriting can be incredibly varied. Sometimes it's about quick notes backstage, scribbling cues or blocking. Other times, it's about creating a prop, like a letter from a character. I remember one time, working on a project, I even accidentally started with the wrong end of the pencil – talk about a struggle to make anything legible! Then there's the challenge of character-specific handwriting. Imagine trying to write a heartfelt letter when your character, like Mary from Little House on the Prairie, is blind. That’s a whole new level of challenge, trying to convey that struggle through the script itself, aiming for those 'illegible, squiggly handwritten lines' that somehow tell a story. You might even have to write so slow that each line, like 'to be at home,' becomes a deliberate, almost painful act. So, is there really a 'good vs bad handwriting' battle between doctors and actors? I think it boils down to context and intent. For doctors, legibility in a prescription is paramount for patient safety. For actors, handwriting might be about character authenticity or quick communication. While doctors' messy handwriting can be frustrating, it often stems from necessity. For actors, 'bad' handwriting might be a deliberate artistic choice or simply a rushed note in a busy environment. We all have moments of less-than-perfect script, don't we? I know I do, especially when I'm tired or trying to jot something down quickly. It makes me appreciate clear writing all the more. Ultimately, whether it's a doctor's note or an actor's prop, clear communication is always the goal. Perhaps understanding the reasons behind 'messy doctor handwriting' can give us a bit more empathy next time we're trying to figure out what that 'handwritten doctor note' actually says. And who knows, maybe some doctors with good handwriting are out there, quietly defying the stereotype! I certainly hope so for the sake of all our eyes!

As someone who grow up in and worked in professional theater, this is pretty accurate. I worked as a performer for years, but I started stage managing for professional theater about 8 years ago. I constantly have to go back in and rewrite blocking and choreo notes lol.
