Handwriting vs. Pen!

This may seem like a pointless post, but it shows that the way you hold your pen is important! The way I hold my pen doesn’t mean that it should be the way you hold yours. What works for me might not work for you! So in this post, I’d like to show you some ways i could possibly hold my pen and what it looks like for my notes! How do you hold your pen?

... Read moreIt’s funny how something as simple as how we hold a pen can have such a big impact on our handwriting, isn't it? Like many of you, I used to think there was one 'right' way, but through experimenting with different pen holding techniques, I’ve learned that comfort and control are key. My journey, much like what’s shown in the main post, involved trying out various grips – from what's often called the 'normal' or dynamic tripod grip to more unique styles like the 'dino claw' and even a 'fist' grip. Each one brought a different outcome to my notes and overall handwriting quality. When people ask 'how to hold a pen for good handwriting,' they often picture a specific, textbook grip. While the dynamic tripod grip (where the pen rests on the side of the middle finger, held by the thumb and index finger) is widely recommended for its balance of control and comfort, it's not the only answer. I found that even with a traditional grip, applying too much pressure or holding the pen too tightly can lead to hand fatigue and shaky lines. This 'normal' grip usually allows for fluid movements, contributing to neat handwriting, but if it feels strained, it's worth exploring alternatives. My experiment with the 'dino claw' grip, for instance, showed me that even unconventional holds can yield surprisingly decent results. It might look a bit awkward, but if it allows for relaxed fingers and good control, why not? Similarly, the 'two fingers' grip, while making my handwriting a bit sloppy initially, highlighted the importance of wrist and arm movement rather than relying solely on finger dexterity. And honestly, I was shocked that even with a 'fist' grip, where control seemed minimal, my handwriting wasn't as bad as I'd expected! This really hammered home the idea that the 'best way to hold pen' is truly personal. So, how do you find your best grip for good handwriting? Start by observing your current hold. Does it feel comfortable after a few minutes of writing? Are your fingers cramped or relaxed? One technique I find helpful is to try loosening your grip. Many people hold their pens too tightly, thinking it gives them more control. In reality, a relaxed grip often leads to smoother lines and less fatigue. Try to hold the pen lightly enough that you could pull it out of your hand with minimal resistance. Another tip is to consider your writing posture and the movement you use. Good handwriting isn't just about finger control; it involves your wrist, arm, and even your shoulder. When writing, try to let your arm move more freely across the page rather than just using your fingers to form letters. This can help prevent hand strain and improve consistency. Experiment with different pen holding positions: try resting the pen a bit higher or lower on your fingers. Sometimes a small adjustment can make a big difference. Don’t be afraid to try some of the 'different ways to hold a pen' that you see others use, or even invent your own! The goal is to maximize comfort and legibility, whether you're aiming for fast writing or just beautiful notes. Ultimately, the perfect grip is the one that allows you to write comfortably for extended periods while producing the clear, consistent handwriting you desire.
