How to Take Digital Notes without an IPad 📝

You don’t need fancy tools to create digital notes worth reviewing. If you already pay for or have Office 365 - then you have OneNote!

If you don’t have the suite already then no worries. The best thing to use is what you have!

Most schools offer it for free or heavily discounted. (I don’t recommend getting it just for this though)

Use whichever text editor you’d like OR do this in a physical notebook.

Here’s my simple way of note taking:

⭐️1. Write and highlight headings.

⭐️2. Write and bold sub-headings.

⭐️3. Write one to two sentences underneath.

That’s it, really. Might seem obvious to some but gotta throw it out there.

Now you have a quick study guide you can reference in the future.

The best part of doing this digitally is for the SEARCH function.

It saves so much time. You can search your specific page or your entire notebook.

I mention OneNote because most people don’t realize they have it! What’s your favorite note taking software?

... Read moreI totally get it! When you see those amazing digital notes with perfectly straight lines and detailed diagrams, you often think 'iPad' right away. It feels like you need one for those advanced features like the OneNote ruler or precise drawing tools. But guess what? You absolutely don't! I've been there, wishing I had the fancy setup, but I quickly learned that OneNote, even without an iPad, offers incredible ways to get similar results and keep your notes looking sharp and organized. One of the biggest myths is that drawing and creating neat diagrams in OneNote is exclusive to touch-screen devices. While a stylus on a tablet can make it feel more natural, OneNote on Windows or even a good Android tablet (if you have one) still has a robust 'Draw' tab. You'll find various colored pens and highlighters, just like those shown in the OCR, ready for your use. Even with a mouse or trackpad, you can practice to draw surprisingly clean figures, especially for simple flowcharts or mind maps. For those 'straight lines' everyone craves, here's a little trick: Use the Shift Key: In many drawing programs, including OneNote on a desktop, holding down the Shift key while drawing a line will snap it to perfectly horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree angles. This is a game-changer for creating tables or separating sections neatly. Grid Lines & Templates: Remember how the OCR showed options to customize the appearance of notes with various rule lines and page colors? You can set default page templates in OneNote to have ruled lines or even a grid pattern. This acts as a 'digital ruler' or guide, helping you draw freehand lines much straighter and more consistently. I customized my page colors to a soft off-white, and added subtle grid lines – it makes such a difference! And what about if you need to annotate something complex? Instead of drawing everything from scratch, try embedding images or PDFs directly into your OneNote page. Then, you can use the 'Draw' tools to highlight, circle, or add quick comments on top of the embedded content. This is fantastic for reviewing lecture slides, textbook excerpts, or even coding snippets. It's incredibly practical and saves so much time compared to redrawing everything. My advice is to experiment with the 'Draw' tab extensively, even if you're just using a mouse. You'll be surprised at how much control you can gain. The key is to leverage OneNote's versatility. Whether it's for highlighting key headings, creating simple diagrams, or just adding a personal touch to your notes, you don't need a specific device. Your existing setup, combined with OneNote's features, is more powerful than you think for creating high-quality, searchable digital notes.
