Top NYC Eats Within Walking Distance from NYU 🍴✨

If you’re an NYU student (or just hanging around campus) and looking for some go-to spots you’ll keep coming back to, here’s a curated list of my all-time faves!

These are all walkable from Bobst Library, so you can grab a bite after class or a long study session. 💜

1. Saigon Shack 🥢

✨ My ultimate comfort food spot! This Vietnamese pho joint is a must-visit, and I was lucky enough to discover it through an NYU alum. Their beef pho is affordable (for NYC standards) with a rich, flavorful broth and generous portions of meat. The crab cake banh mi is another star—packed with flavor and sauce that hits all the right notes.

📍 6-minute walk from Bobst

2. Gyu-Kaku 🔥

Love Japanese BBQ? This place is a solid pick. Their lunch sets are perfect, especially the garlic shrimp! While consistency can vary, when they’re on point, it’s so worth it.

📍 9-minute walk from Bobst

3. Ruby’s Café 🥑

Originally from Australia, Ruby’s serves one of the best avocado BLTs I’ve ever had! Their sandwiches are generously sized, and their pastas are also great if you’re feeling like carbs. Perfect for brunch or a casual lunch.

📍 14-minute walk from Bobst

4. Fish Cheeks 🐟

Not exaggerating when I say I’ve been here almost 10 times. This Thai spot is the place for fresh, flavorful dishes. Pro tip: Stick to the best menu items—crispy chicken wings, steamed fish (no bones!), crab fried rice, Tom Yum soup, and curry shrimp. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!

📍 10-minute walk from Bobst

5. Ootoya 🍱

A Japanese chain specializing in homestyle set meals like curry rice, sukiyaki, and soba noodles. It’s simple, consistent, and perfect for solo diners. Not life-changing, but no bad surprises either—and the cozy vibes are a bonus.

📍 8-minute walk from Bobst

6. TsuruTonTan 🍜

Craving udon? Their truffle beef udon is a game-changer. Rich, aromatic, and so good that you’ll want to try making it at home (spoiler: it’s harder than it looks).

📍 14-minute walk from Bobst

7. Pranakhon 🇹🇭

Lisa-approved Thai cuisine just a stone’s throw from the SPS building. Don’t miss their Pad Thai, Thai sausage fried rice, or Tom Yum soup. Seasonal treats like mango sticky rice are a must-try!

📍 8-minute walk from Bobst

8. Nami Nori 🍣

This trendy Japanese handroll bar is an Instagram fave for a reason. Think uni, eel, and other creative rolls that melt in your mouth. Bonus: Their blistered shishito peppers are a perfect starter. Reservations are a good idea.

📍 9-minute walk from Bobst

9. Boka 🍗

For Korean fried chicken lovers—this is the spot. Their crispy, juicy, and flavorful chicken is everything you want in KFC (Korean Fried Chicken 😉).

📍 14-minute walk from Bobst

💡 Save this list for your next food adventure around NYU! Whether you're into pho, BBQ, or handrolls, these spots won’t disappoint. ✨

... Read moreLiving in NYC as an NYU student can be tough on the wallet, but finding delicious and affordable food near campus is totally doable! Beyond the fantastic spots already mentioned, I've picked up a few tricks to make my dining budget stretch further. Many of these places, like Saigon Shack, offer incredible lunch specials that are way cheaper than dinner. Their beef pho, for example, is already a great deal, but checking out their lunch menu can uncover even better value. Similarly, Gyu-Kaku has amazing lunch sets that are perfect if you’re craving Japanese BBQ without breaking the bank. Always look for those midday deals! Sometimes, you just need a quick grab-and-go or a cozy spot for a coffee and a pastry while studying, which brings us to the 'NYU cafe' search! While Ruby's Cafe is fantastic for a sit-down brunch with their killer avocado BLT or pasta, there are other great cafe options nearby for speedier needs. Think about places where you can grab a quick bagel and coffee before class, or a smoothie for a healthy boost. These aren't always full restaurants but are crucial for student life. I often pop into different coffee shops around Washington Square Park for a change of scenery and a caffeine fix. They might not be on my 'top dinner spots' list, but they're lifesavers for daily fuel. Navigating the food scene around NYU can feel overwhelming, but a little planning goes a long way. For popular spots like Nami Nori, making reservations, especially for dinner or weekend brunch, is a game-changer. Trust me, waiting for a table when you're starving after a long day of classes is no fun! Also, don't forget to check if places offer student discounts – sometimes a quick flash of your NYU ID can save you a few bucks. I've found that some places have loyalty programs too, which can add up if you're a regular. And what about those late-night cravings after a Bobst study session? While not all places are open super late, knowing your options for a delicious, quick bite can save the day. Think about places that offer takeout or delivery if you're too tired to dine in. The beauty of being so close to Washington Square Park is the sheer variety at your fingertips. From the spicy kick of Thai curry at Fish Cheeks to the comforting Japanese homestyle meals at Ootoya, there's always something to satisfy your mood. For my fellow students with specific dietary needs, many of these spots are surprisingly accommodating. For instance, most Thai and Vietnamese places, like Pranakhon or Saigon Shack, offer plenty of vegetarian or even vegan options if you ask. Don't be shy about inquiring about gluten-free choices either; NYC restaurants are generally quite good about catering to different diets. I've personally found it easy to find great meals even when eating with friends who have restrictions, making dining out much less stressful. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty bowl of pho, crispy Korean fried chicken, fresh Japanese handrolls, or a comforting plate of pasta, the area around NYU truly has it all, conveniently within walking distance. These are the places that have become my reliable favorites, making student life in NYC a little bit tastier and a lot more fun!
