... Read moreOkay, so I've already shared my initial thoughts on my boyfriend's Steam Deck, but I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what it's really like to use, especially for those longer gaming sessions we all love (or dread, depending on the device!).
My biggest hang-up, as I mentioned, is that it's a bit bulky and heavy. This really becomes apparent after about an hour or so of continuous play. If I'm lying in bed, trying to hold it up, my wrists definitely start to feel it. It’s labeled as a 'massive gaming device' in the picture, and trust me, it lives up to that description! For me, playing while propped up against pillows or with my elbows resting on the mattress makes a huge difference. If you're someone who gets easily fatigued by heavier devices, definitely consider a stand or even a softer pillow to support your arms. I've heard some people get grips to make it more ergonomic, and that's something I might look into myself because a little extra comfort could really enhance those marathon gaming sessions.
Speaking of marathon sessions, the images mentioned games like 'Fields of Mistria,' 'Hades,' 'Europa,' and 'Hogwarts.' These are exactly the kind of immersive games that are perfect for getting lost in for hours. I've spent over 10 hours on 'Fields of Mistria' alone! The Steam Deck really shines for these 'cozy gaming' moments. Imagine snuggling under a blanket, wrapped up in a story like 'Hogwarts' or strategizing in 'Hades.' The portability means I don't have to be stuck at a desk; I can just 'rot in bed' and game to my heart's content.
Another thing the OCR picked up was that the device can 'get hot.' Honestly, I haven't found this to be a major issue in my experience, but it's something to be aware of. Usually, it's just a warm sensation around the back, especially during more demanding games. It's never been uncomfortably hot for me, but if you're sensitive to heat, it's worth noting.
The game sharing feature is a total lifesaver for us. Since both of our accounts are linked, we can easily switch between profiles and access each other's libraries. It's so seamless! No more buying duplicate games or fighting over who gets to play what. It really makes the Steam Deck feel like a shared household device, which is awesome. It's one of the best 'pros' listed in the images, and I totally agree.
And that screen! Even though the device itself is chunky, the screen size and clarity are truly perfect for me. The vibrant display makes 'Fields of Mistria' look absolutely beautiful, and the details in 'Hades' really pop. It's big enough to feel immersive but not so big that it becomes unwieldy for handheld play. For a portable console, it really delivers on the visual front.
So, while the Steam Deck does have its weight and bulk, its incredible screen, easy game sharing, and the sheer joy of cozy gaming anywhere make it a really compelling device. If you're looking for a portable powerhouse that lets you enjoy your Steam library from the comfort of your bed or couch, and you don't mind its heft, then it's definitely worth considering. It's truly a 'gaming essential' for me now!
