Zeigarnik Effect
Zeigarnik Effect is a psychological phenomenon described as
Humans will remember "unfinished" tasks better than finished ones.
🦩 this idea was discovered by a Lithuanian psychologist named
Bluma Zeigarnik in the 1920s.
🌏 the origin of the theory.
Zeigarnik observed that the waitress in the restaurant remembered the order of the unpaid table very accurately.
But once paid, it's easy to forget the details.
So she did the experiment and found:
• People better remember interrupted work.
• Tasks that are "closed are over." The brain will let go faster.
🧠 psychological mechanism.
The Zeigarnik Effect is caused by cognitive tension.
When we haven't finished anything:
• The brain builds gravity to resume.
• The short-term memory system also holds the loop open.
• The push to "want to end"
If described simply:
Unfinished work = Open cycle
Finished task = closed cycle
👁️ real-life example.
1️⃣ Read the exam.
Read and hold the key chapter.
→ Will feel overnight
→ Likely to go back to reading
2️⃣ series that ends cliffhanger.
Such as the techniques used in Breaking Bad.
→ Viewers want to watch the next episode immediately.
3️⃣ To-do list
If you write a task but you haven't done it yet,
→ The brain will repeatedly warn.
💪🏻 the benefits of the Zeigarnik Effect.
✔ Use to increase Productivity
• Just five minutes to start.
• Stop in the middle of the way.
• The brain will want to continue by itself.
This technique is similar to the concept in the book.
Atomic Habits
That focuses on "starting as small as possible."
✔ used in marketing / communication.
• Make content in episodes
• Leave open-ended questions
• Create an unclosed narrative
✔ used in school.
If you are preparing for the exam (which is consistent with the guidelines you like in-depth analysis):
• Do not finish the chapter every time
• Stop at the challenge point
• Leave questions for the brain to continue working
This will cause a "mental rehearsal," even at rest.
🫀 negative side of the Zeigarnik Effect.
• Make a loop (rumination)
• Causing insomnia if there is a sleepover
• Stress from unfinished work
💄 solution:
• Write a list of tasks from the head (externalized memory)
• Use the task management system
• Close a small loop to end often.
✍🏻 the shortest summary.
The brain does not like things that are not yet closed.
And will try to pull you back to "get it done." 🥳🥳
