The Weight of the Stone

Lena sat on the park bench, clutching a small stone in her hand. It was smooth, gray, and cold; a piece of her grief she carried everywhere since losing her brother.

Her friend Maya noticed the heaviness in her eyes and sat down beside her.

“I can feel exactly what you’re feeling,” Maya said, reaching for the stone. “Give it to me, I’ll carry it too.” She squeezed it tightly, but within moments her own face twisted with discomfort. “This hurts too much,” she whispered, putting the stone back in Lena’s palm. Maya thought she was helping, but all she had done was add her own weight to Lena’s burden.

That was empathy: trying to live someone else’s pain so fully that neither of them could move forward.

Then came Grace, another friend. She didn’t try to take the stone. Instead, she placed a hand on Lena’s shoulder. “I can’t know the exact weight of your sorrow,” she said softly, “but I see you. I honor your loss. And I’ll sit with you while you carry it.”

Grace didn’t claim the pain as her own. She offered comfort, strength, and presence. She didn’t collapse under the stone, she helped Lena walk with it.

That was sympathy: recognizing pain, respecting it, and responding with compassion.

Later that night, Lena realized something important. Empathy had left her feeling even more alone, because no one could truly be her. But sympathy gave her hope, because it reminded her she wasn’t abandoned. Someone cared enough to stay by her side, even when they couldn’t take the stone away.
