6 Things my Shelter Dog Taught Me ♥️

I’ve had Sadie for 10 years. She has taught much in these 10 years. She was two when I adopted her. She wasn’t potty trained or trained at all. She had kennel cough and luxating patellas. She is a senior now and she’s been my best friend through it all.

... Read moreAdopting a shelter dog can be a truly transformative experience that extends well beyond simply providing a home. Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate how a dog like Sadie, who started with no training and some health issues, taught me patience, compassion, and unconditional love. One important lesson is to never assume an adult dog is fully trained just because of their age. Many shelter dogs, like Sadie, arrive needing potty training or socialization. Committing to consistent and gentle training efforts can lead to wonderful results, but it takes time—sometimes three months or longer—for a shelter dog to feel fully settled in their new home and show their true personality. Another insight I gained is regarding health concerns. Shelter dogs don’t always come with a complete history, so surprises like luxating patellas or kennel cough are possible. It’s essential to be prepared for potential vet visits and ongoing care. Despite these challenges, shelter dogs have an abundance of love to give and deserve a chance at a happy, fulfilling life. Moreover, adopting a shelter dog is a long-term commitment, often 12-15 years or more. Accepting and loving them for who they are—including their past experiences, quirks, and needs—is key to building a strong bond. Perhaps most rewarding is watching a dog’s transformation from a nervous shelter animal into a joyful family member. Shelter dogs teach resilience and the power of second chances. For anyone considering adoption, know that while the initial months may require patience and adjustment, the lifelong friendship that follows is profoundly rewarding and life-changing.
