I’ve had Sadie for 10 years. She has taught much in these 10 years. She was two when I adopted her. She wasn’t potty trained or trained at all. She had kennel cough and luxating patellas. She is a senior now and she’s been my best friend through it all.

Moreover, adopting a shelter dog is a long-term commitment, often 12-15 years or more. Accepting and loving them for who they are—including their past experiences, quirks, and needs—is key to building a strong bond. Perhaps most rewarding is watching a dog’s transformation from a nervous shelter animal into a joyful family member. Shelter dogs teach resilience and the power of second chances. For anyone considering adoption, know that while the initial months may require patience and adjustment, the lifelong friendship that follows is profoundly rewarding and life-changing.
