Sharing Hidden History From:

3 Facts About Sundown Towns:

📚Currently Reading: Sundown Towns by James W Loewen

1.  Sundown Towns are of recent American History. The Midwest has the most sundown towns in America with Illinois leading the pack with approximately 472 sundown towns.

All white communities on purpose excluding African Americans, sometimes Hispanic, Native Americans and Asians.

Sundown towns still exist today.

2. This period of American History is considered to be the lowest point of race relations called the “Nadir” of Race Relations in America from the 1890s-1940s.

A period where African Americans were forced back into non-citizenship.

3. Local historians strategically leave out the history of their sundown town behavior when reporting about their communities.

Some have reported it's embarrassing to discuss another period of "dark history " in America that proves America’s history is based in racism and white supremacy. #historyeverywhere #bookrecommendation #ushistory

... Read moreThrough reading about Sundown Towns, I realized how deeply entrenched racial exclusion was in many American communities, especially in the Midwest. Illinois alone had roughly 472 of these towns where African Americans and other minorities were systematically excluded through laws and community practices. This exclusion wasn’t accidental but deliberate, reflected in signs and real estate advertisements that made it clear minorities were not welcome. What struck me most was the connection to the period known as the "Nadir" of Race Relations in America, spanning from the 1890s to the 1940s. During this time, African Americans were increasingly disenfranchised and pushed out of public life, with Sundown Towns serving as a stark symbol of that societal regression. The denial of citizenship rights and safety was institutionalized in these spaces, often enforced by both formal ordinances and informal but powerful local social norms. What’s more alarming is the lack of acknowledgement by some local historians who choose to exclude or downplay this part of their town's history. I think it reveals a broader national reluctance to confront uncomfortable truths about racism and white supremacy in America’s past. This denial perpetuates silence around the subject and impedes true reckoning and reconciliation. Personally, learning about Sundown Towns has deepened my understanding of systemic racism's historical roots and its lasting effects today. It has encouraged me to seek out and amplify marginalized voices and histories that are often hidden or ignored. Acknowledging these truths is a crucial step toward building a more inclusive future where everyone's history is respected and taught openly.
