... Read moreAs someone living with Type 1 Diabetes, going on hikes offers both incredible rewards and unique challenges. During longer hikes, like multi-kilometer treks over varied terrain, managing blood sugar levels requires careful planning and constant attention. I’ve learned that keeping snacks handy and monitoring glucose frequently can prevent dangerous lows that can suddenly arise, especially when your body is sprinting or exerting itself beyond typical limits. One memorable experience was on a beautiful hike where my blood sugar unexpectedly dropped. The feeling of falling glucose levels hit hard, and I had to take a quick break to stabilize. It reminded me how the pancreas, which no longer produces insulin in T1D, leaves our bodies vulnerable to sudden changes during physical activity. These moments emphasize the massive responsibility we carry daily. Staying active is vital, but every step must be balanced with awareness of how your body reacts. Having a supportive hiking partner, or a husband in my case, who understands the condition makes it easier to enjoy nature without fear. We sprint or pause as needed, always ready to adjust insulin or carb intake. Ultimately, Type 1 Diabetes requires adapting life’s routines but doesn’t mean giving up on incredible adventures and embracing moments of beauty on every trail. Hopeful and prepared, I continue to learn how to thrive and live fully despite the challenges diabetes brings.
