Newborn Baby Weight
My baby was born at 38 weeks and was a tiny little thing! Those last few weeks the feeling in my pelvis, I could have sworn he was a 10 lb baby.
How much did your baby weigh at birth?

It's so fascinating how different every baby's birth story is, especially when it comes to their newborn baby weight! Like many first-time moms, I had my own expectations, and I know that feeling of surprise when your little one arrives, whether they're bigger or smaller than you imagined. My friend recently had a baby who was also on the smaller side, just like the 5 lbs 12 oz baby mentioned in the image, and it got us talking about what's truly considered 'normal.' Generally, a newborn baby weight between 5 pounds 8 ounces (about 2.5 kg) and 10 pounds (about 4.5 kg) is considered average at full term. But honestly, there's such a wide healthy range! You might hear about a 2.2 kg baby or even an 8lb 5oz baby, and they can all be perfectly healthy. What's most important is that your baby is healthy and growing at their own pace, and your pediatrician will help guide you. One thing that often catches new parents off guard is the initial weight loss in newborn babies. It's completely normal for babies, especially those who are breastfeeding newborn weight gain, to lose about 5-10% of their birth weight in the first few days after delivery. This is usually due to shedding excess fluid and getting used to feeding. Most babies regain their birth weight by about 10-14 days old. Don't panic if your little one seems to lose a little at first – it's a common part of the process! After those first couple of weeks, you'll start to see consistent newborn weight gain week by week. Pediatricians usually look for babies to gain about 0.5 to 1 ounce (15-30 grams) per day for the first few months. By the time they reach 3 months baby weight, many babies have gained quite a bit, often doubling their birth weight by 4-5 months. It's truly amazing to watch their newborn baby growth stages unfold, and those chunky thighs are the best! Factors like gestational age (like my baby being born at 38 weeks!), genetics, and even the mother's health during pregnancy can influence how much a baby weighs when born. So, if you had a 5 lb baby at birth, it doesn't automatically mean there's an issue; it's about the overall health picture and continuous monitoring with your healthcare provider. What's your experience been like with baby weight when born? Did your baby surprise you with their size? I'd love to hear your stories and any tips you have for new parents navigating those first few weeks of growth and those precious new born baby weight milestones!
