I read 11 books in November so instead of listing them all here are my 2 favs and 2 least favorites
Favs:
🖤Monstrilio: I gave this book 6 stars because it honestly broke my scale of ratings. This is one of those books I will think about for years to come. Not only was this my favorite read of the year but also probably made it into my top 5 of all time.
🖤 The Good Daughter: I thought I was a Karin Slaughter hater but I am apparently not. I really loved this book. I was engaged from beginning to end and I honestly got emotional at several times. Check TWs if you need to because this is dark!
🖤Haunted Forest Tour: I wanted to like this so bad but I just couldn’t get into it. I typically love Jeff Strand but this just fell flat for me. I didn’t feel like there was enough world building to make this enjoyable for me. I also didn’t really find it funny when I was supposed to.
🖤 Drop Dead Sisters: Least favorite of the year maybe least favorite ever. Everyone (especially the main character) was so horrible and insufferable I didn’t even care what happened to them I just wanted the book to end. Tried to be witty but none of it landed for me.
Honorable mention to Waking Up in Vegas by J E Rowney which would have been worst book of all time but I couldn’t make it past 50 pages. Felt like it was written by AI (deragatory) or someone who has never spoken to anyone before. (And if you’re going to write a book about a popular location at least go there or have some sort of general familiarity bc it was obvious the author had never been to Vegas)
... Read moreReading 11 books in November was quite a journey, and honestly, each month feels like a new adventure with different stories to uncover! Beyond my absolute top two, 'Monstrilio' and 'The Good Daughter,' I wanted to share a bit more about what makes a book truly stand out for me, and some practical tips on how I tackle my monthly reading goals. It's not just about hitting a number; it's about the richness of the experience and finding those true 5-star gems.
Talking about 'The Good Daughter' by Karin Slaughter really got me thinking about the craft of suspense. What truly grips me isn't just a sudden plot twist, but a slow, creeping unease where you're constantly pulled deeper into the characters' lives and their dark secrets. For me, the key to building suspense, as expertly demonstrated in 'The Good Daughter,' is making me care profoundly about what happens next. It's the emotional connection, the feeling that the stakes are incredibly high for the characters, that keeps me turning pages late into the night. When an author can craft characters who feel so real, even when they're facing unimaginable darkness and moral dilemmas, that's when the suspense becomes unbearable in the best possible way. It’s not about being outright scared from page one, but rather a growing tension and a desperate need to know how these people will navigate their impossible situations. This deep emotional investment is why 'The Good Daughter' earned its perfect 5 stars from me – the suspense felt earned and truly impactful.
Beyond the intense suspense, November was also a month of discovering diverse voices and diving into various genres. If you're constantly on the hunt for new books recommended by fellow readers, I've found that joining online book communities, exploring specific hashtags on platforms like #BookTok, or even just checking out reader-posted reviews on Lemon8 is fantastic for unearthing recent releases and hidden gems. I try to balance my reading list each month with different genres – maybe a gripping psychological thriller, a thought-provoking literary fiction, a heartwarming romance, and a bit of fantasy. This keeps things fresh and helps me avoid those dreaded reading slumps. For those wondering how I manage to read so many books in a month, honestly, it’s about making reading a consistent part of my day. I carve out time daily, even if it's just 30 minutes before bed, during my commute, or while waiting for dinner to cook. And I've learned not to feel guilty about putting a book down if it's not working for me – sometimes those 1-star reads like 'Drop Dead Sisters' are just not for everyone, and that's okay! It's all about finding what truly resonates with your taste. Remember, every 5-star read starts with taking a chance on a book you think you'll love. Don't be afraid to experiment and trust your instincts!
What is Monstrilio about? Have never heard of it before but your review is definitely making me consider adding it to my tbr list!! Love your reviews!!
I’ve heard Karin Slaughter is an amazing author! I’ve been in to romcom lately but will hopefully go back to murder/mystery/suspense soon.
