Your Postpartum Body Common Postpartum Changes
Similar to how your body changed during pregnancy, you can also expect some changes postpartum.
Some of these changes happen shortly after birth, while others unfold over a span of months.
Hair
Around 3 to 6 months after birth, your hormone levels drop off and you may start losing hair. It may come out in clumps while you shower or while brushing your hair.
Night Sweats
If you are waking up in the middle of the night in a puddle of sweat, do not panic. Night sweats are normal during the first few weeks.
They are the result of changing hormones and excess fluid in your body from pregnancy. Your body no longer needs this fluid after birth, so it rids it through sweat and urine.
Skin
Maybe you developed linea nigra (the dark line that extends down the belly), birthmarks, or scars that became darker. These changes occurred because your body produced more melanin (the pigment that gives your skin color) during pregnancy. Most of these skin changes fade away shortly after childbirth.
Swelling
You may experience some swelling in your legs and feet after birth. To reduce swelling, drink water and elevate your legs. Swelling of the face and limbs can also be a sign of postpartum preeclampsia
Varicose Veins
Genetics and hormonal changes during pregnancy are responsible for these tiny dilated blood vessels near the skin's surface in your legs.
Varicose veins eventually become less visible, but it can take several months.
Weight Loss
It is possible to lose up to 20 pounds in the first month. But a more realistic number is closer to 10 to 12 pounds, depending on your body type. If you are breastfeeding, you may lose weight a little faster.
