Sex After Birth

When to become sexually active again is unique to each person's recovery. Your body has been through many changes and needs time to heal (this takes about 6 weeks).

Since you and your partner are dealing with new emotions and lack of sleep, 1 (or both) of you may not be ready for sex. Talking openly can reduce frustration. It is important to respect each other's needs and be patient.

Resuming sexual intercourse:

• Ask about becoming sexually active again at your follow-up visit

• Do not feel pressured if you are not ready

• Once you are ready, consider using a water-based lubricant

• Due to hormone release during intercourse, it is normal for your breasts to leak milk

... Read moreReturning to intimacy after childbirth is a journey unique to every parent, and trust me, it’s completely normal to have a million questions running through your mind. When can you actually have sexual intercourse again? What if you feel ready at three or four weeks postpartum, but everyone says six? Let’s dive into understanding why the typical six-week waiting period is often recommended and what you should know to make informed, comfortable choices for yourself and your partner. Most medical professionals suggest waiting around six weeks after birth before resuming sexual activity, and there are very good reasons for this. Your body has just undergone a tremendous transformation! Internally, your uterus needs time to involute (shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size) and for the placental site, where the placenta was attached, to heal completely. If you had a vaginal birth, any stitches from tears or an episiotomy need time to mend. Engaging in sex too early, especially at three or four weeks postpartum, can significantly increase your risk of infection, hemorrhage (excessive bleeding), and reopening healing wounds. It’s not just about feeling physically ready; it’s about allowing your body the crucial time it needs to recover safely. I remember feeling a mix of emotions during that time – sometimes eager to reconnect, other times completely exhausted. It’s so important to listen to your body and discuss any concerns at your postpartum follow-up visit. Your doctor can assess your healing and give you personalized advice on when it’s truly safe for you to resume sexual intercourse. Don’t feel pressured if you’re not ready, whether it’s at six weeks or even later. Everyone’s recovery timeline is different, and your emotional and mental readiness are just as vital as your physical healing. When you do feel ready to ease back into intimacy, there are a few practical tips that can make the experience more comfortable. Postpartum vaginal dryness is incredibly common, often due to hormonal shifts, especially if you’re breastfeeding. So, consider using a good quality water-based lubricant – it can make a huge difference in preventing discomfort. You might also find starting slowly and exploring different positions helpful. And yes, it’s completely normal for your breasts to leak milk during intercourse due to hormone release! A towel or nursing pads are your friends here, and honestly, it’s just another part of the beautiful, messy reality of postpartum life. Remember to have open conversations with your partner about what feels good, what doesn't, and take things at a pace that works for both of you. This is a new chapter for your relationship, and patience and communication are key.
