How trail running starts

2024/12/21 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so I'll be honest, when your boyfriend is a trail runner, you hear a lot about epic views, challenging climbs, and getting absolutely filthy! For a long time, I just cheered him on from the sidelines, but seeing his passion for exploring nature on foot got me thinking: 'Could I actually do that?' That's how my own trail running journey began, and trust me, if I can do it, you can too! Starting trail running can seem daunting, especially if you're used to pavement. My first tip? Don't overthink it. You don't need a full gear closet to begin. The most crucial piece of equipment is a decent pair of trail running shoes. They offer better grip and protection than road shoes, which is essential for uneven terrain. Beyond that, comfortable activewear, a water bottle or hydration pack (even for short runs!), and perhaps a light jacket for unpredictable weather are great. I found that starting with a walk-run approach was key to building my confidence and endurance. I'd alternate between walking for 2 minutes and jogging for 3 minutes, gradually increasing my running segments. It’s not about speed at first, it’s about enjoying the process and connecting with nature. One of my biggest initial challenges was finding suitable routes. I specifically wanted 'running routes near me with a 5km loop' because it felt achievable and less intimidating than a long, point-to-point trail. I started by using apps like AllTrails and Strava, which are fantastic for discovering local paths and seeing what others are running. Don't be afraid to ask local running stores or community groups for recommendations – they often know the hidden gems! When scouting a route, I look for trails marked as 'easy' or 'moderate' with minimal elevation gain for my first few runs. A 5km loop is perfect because it gives you a clear goal and means you end up right where you started, which is super convenient when you're still figuring things out. I remember one of my first 5km trail loops. It was in a local nature park, mostly packed dirt with a few gentle inclines. I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. But as I ran, the sounds of the city faded, replaced by birdsong and the crunch of leaves under my feet. It was a completely different experience from road running – more engaging, more peaceful. Even when I had to slow down to a walk on a steeper section, I didn't feel defeated; I just enjoyed the view. This is what trail running is all about: embracing the journey, enjoying the scenery, and challenging yourself in a new way. Safety is also a big one when you head off-road. Always tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back. Carry your phone, and if possible, run with a buddy, especially when exploring new trails. I always pack a small first-aid kit with basics like band-aids and antiseptic wipes, just in case of a minor scrape. It’s all part of becoming a confident trail runner. So, if you're like me and have been curious about trail running, take that first step! Find a local 5km loop, lace up your shoes, and discover the incredible feeling of running free in nature.

The next step in my running journey
One day, my senior year of high school, I just got the itch to start running— something I had always dreaded. Although I ran track for a few years, I was not a fan of anything more than 400m. From the mile in gym class, to warmups in field hockey, I knew running as a sufferfest. But for some reaso

13.32 miles. 1,895 feet of elevation. 3 hours of sweat, grit, and good ol’ Midwestern humidity. Not gonna lie… it was tough. But I showed up, pushed through, and crossed that finish line (even if i was 13 miles short) with muddy shoes and a smile on my face. This one’s for every early morning, e
