... Read moreWow, what a journey! Completing a 20-mile long run is always a huge accomplishment, but doing it on a treadmill brings a whole new level of mental game. I remember looking at the screen, asking myself, 'Can I run 20 miles on the treadmill?' and deciding right then and there to find out! Usually, my Sunday long runs are outside, enjoying the scenery. But with Dopey Challenge training ramping up and unpredictable weather, the treadmill became my best friend for this crucial distance. The initial miles felt great, hitting 'Mile 4' without much thought. But as I passed 'Mile 10 halfway point!', that's when the real mental battle began. The monotony can be a killer on the treadmill. My strategy? Breaking it down into smaller chunks, focusing on my stride, and distracting myself with a good podcast or show. It's amazing how much mental toughness you build by just staying on that belt! Beyond the mental aspect, the physical demands of a long treadmill run are unique. You don't get the same varied terrain as outside, which means certain muscles can get fatigued differently. Hydration and fueling were key – I made sure to have my water bottles and gels within easy reach. Listening to my body, adjusting pace, and reminding myself of the 'Disney' goal kept me going. This kind of rigorous training truly shapes a 'runner's body,' not just in terms of endurance but also resilience. After hitting 'Mile 20! It is complete!', the feeling of accomplishment was incredible. It's a significant 'confirmation of this accomplishment' and a huge confidence booster for the Dopey Challenge. For anyone tackling a long run, especially indoors, remember these tips: Break it Down: Don't think about the full distance. Focus on the next mile, or even the next 15 minutes. Distraction is Your Friend: Podcasts, music, TV shows – whatever helps the time pass. Hydrate & Fuel: Keep your nutrition and hydration plan consistent, even indoors where you might sweat more. Listen to Your Body: Treadmill running can feel different. Don't be afraid to adjust your pace or take a short walk break if needed. Visualize Your Goal: For me, it's crossing that finish line at Disney! What's yours? Recovery after such a run is just as important as the run itself. Immediately after, I focus on refueling with protein and carbs, then some gentle stretching and foam rolling. Getting enough sleep is crucial for muscle repair. This commitment to recovery is vital for building a strong, injury-resistant 'runner's body' capable of taking on challenges like the Dopey. Every Sunday long run brings me closer to my goal, and each one teaches me something new about my limits and how to push past them.
