Structured Literacy Based Curriculums

After my initial excitement about discovering Structured Literacy, a new question popped into my head: 'Okay, so how do I really know if my child's school is using it correctly, or what can I do to support them even more at home?' It's a journey, and I’ve learned so much that I want to share, especially since the original article highlighted that crucial question: 'Parents! How do you know if your child's reading curriculum is effective?' Firstly, identifying a truly Structured Literacy-based program goes beyond just asking the school. While asking is a great start, I’ve found it helpful to understand what to look for. A strong program will have explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, meaning sounds are taught in a clear, sequential order, not randomly. You'll see teachers breaking down words into individual sounds (phonemes) and connecting them to letters (graphemes). Multi-sensory approaches are also a huge plus—think tracing letters, using sand trays, or clapping out syllables. If a curriculum relies heavily on children guessing words from pictures or context clues (the 'three-cueing system'), that's a red flag. True Structured Literacy empowers kids to decode words, giving them the tools to read anything. At home, there's so much we can do to reinforce these skills without turning reading into a chore. My favorite activities often involve play! For phonemic awareness, I play rhyming games during car rides or ask my child to clap out syllables in words we hear. We also love using magnetic letters to build words, practicing short vowel sounds, and blending them together. Decodable books, which only use the letter sounds and patterns a child has already learned, have been incredibly helpful. They build confidence because my child can actually read them independently. It’s not about memorizing sight words exclusively, but about understanding the building blocks of language. Reading aloud together is still vital for vocabulary and comprehension, but I now make sure to point out interesting word patterns or sounds we've been practicing. Understanding the 'Science of Reading' has been truly transformative for me as a parent. It’s not a fad; it’s a body of research from fields like neuroscience, education, and linguistics, showing how our brains learn to read. Before, I might have thought a child just needed to 'read more' or 'try harder' if they struggled. Now, I understand that some children need explicit, systematic instruction in foundational skills. It’s a relief to know that when a child struggles, it's often not about their intelligence or effort, but about the method they've been taught. Embracing this evidence-based approach makes all the difference. It ensures we're not leaving essential skills to chance, but systematically building a strong foundation for lifelong reading enjoyment and success.
