Camera anxiety? You are not alone!

Many of us cringe when we see ourselves on camera, and it’s more than just about being shy, introvert, or socially anxious.

Being uncomfortable on camera-live or recorded-may reveal hidden layers tied to psychological states, identity, personality, early experiences, and how we perceive ourselves. Understanding them may help make sense of why camera could cause unusual emotional stress, and why certain reactions feel automatic.

At the link in bio, the story draws on psychological studies and analyzes those hidden layers. (📷: Foad Roshan/Unsplash)

... Read moreMany people find seeing themselves on camera unsettling or stressful, and this goes far beyond simple shyness or social anxiety. Psychological research reveals that this discomfort stems from complex interactions between how we perceive ourselves internally and the external image we see reflected back at us. When you watch yourself on screen, your brain simultaneously takes on two conflicting roles—you’re both the observer and the observed. This duality can create a cognitive dissonance, similar to reading a private diary that seems annotated by someone else. It externalizes parts of your identity that are usually private, making you suddenly confront aspects of yourself from an unfamiliar perspective. Our brains constantly make predictions about what we will see, hear, and feel, developing a stable internal self-image based on memory and experience. Seeing yourself on camera disrupts that image because the visual sensory information doesn’t always match your mental expectations perfectly. This mismatch can trigger feelings of anxiety or self-consciousness as your brain struggles to reconcile these contradictory views. Furthermore, childhood experiences and personality traits can influence the intensity of camera anxiety. People with stronger self-critical tendencies or those exposed to early negative feedback about their appearance or behavior may be more prone to feeling stress when their image is captured and displayed. Understanding these hidden psychological layers helps explain why reacting anxiously to cameras is so common and feels automatic. It’s not simply a matter of being introverted or shy; it involves deeper cognitive and emotional processes related to identity, memory, and perception. If camera anxiety affects you, know that you are far from alone. Strategies such as gradual exposure, mindful self-compassion, and focusing on your message rather than appearance can help reduce discomfort. Ultimately, embracing a more forgiving and realistic view of yourself when on camera can transform anxiety into confidence.
