I thought I just didn’t sleep well.

I thought it was anxiety.

I thought it was just who I was now.

every single night.

2am.

3am.

4am.

wide awake.

mind racing.

body completely depleted but absolutely refusing to rest.

I would lie there for hours.

or just give up and start my day in the dark.

exhausted before it even began.

I saw doctors.

I tried everything.

every single lab came back normal.

every single doctor told me I was fine.

but I was starting every day already running on empty.

and it was slowly breaking me.

here is what nobody told me.

waking up between 2 and 4am is not random.

it is not insomnia.

it is not just who you are.

it is your cortisol spiking in the middle of the night when it is supposed to be at its lowest.

it is your body stuck in survival mode even while you sleep.

it is your nervous system that never got the message that you are safe.

I didn’t have a sleep problem.

I had a cortisol problem.

and the night I finally addressed the real issue was the first night I slept through in years.

It’s almost as if your brain and body are stuck in a state of ‘survival mode,’ not getting the message that you're safe and can relax. What helped me was addressing the root cause instead of just treating the symptom of sleeplessness. This included managing stress, improving my diet to support hormone balance, and incorporating relaxation techniques like mindfulness and gentle movement before bed. Consistency in sleep routines and minimizing screen time also played a big role. I also found that gut health ties into this hormonal dance. A balanced gut microbiome supports overall hormone regulation, including cortisol. Small changes such as adding probiotics or eating more fiber-rich foods helped me feel more grounded. If you find yourself wide awake during those early morning hours, it might be worth exploring your cortisol levels and lifestyle factors affecting stress. This insight changed my nights from restless to restful, and it might do the same for you. Remember, you are not broken—your body is signaling that something needs attention. Taking time to listen to these signals and adopting a holistic approach can transform your sleep and overall well-being.
