In a traffic jam… but the real problem was inside

Traffic jams can be frustrating, but what many don't realize is that the real problems often come from within the cars involved rather than just the congestion itself. From my experience, driver behavior, vehicle maintenance, and even in-car distractions heavily contribute to the severity and length of traffic jams. For instance, abrupt lane changes or inconsistent speeds by drivers cause ripple effects that slow the entire flow. I found that maintaining a steady pace and keeping a safe distance from the car ahead helps ease traffic buildup. Also, distractions like texting or digging through items inside the car limit reaction time and increase the chance of minor accidents that worsen jams. Additionally, understanding local traffic conditions, such as peak hours or routes prone to jams—like those near PSA Tuas Terminal or popular cross-border routes such as between Bukit Indah and Singapore—guided my trip planning. Apps that provide real-time data on traffic density have been a great help to avoid sudden bottlenecks. Lastly, ensuring basic vehicle fitness impacts overall road safety and flow. Regular checks and simple preventive maintenance can reduce sudden breakdowns that contribute to congestion. Awareness and small changes in how we drive and care for our cars can transform the daily commute experience, making traffic less stressful and more manageable.
