Ruthless Vows, Book 2 in the Letters of Enchantment Duology
Author: Rebecca Ross
Genre: YA Fantasy/fantasy historical fiction
Rating: ♾️
“Their souls weren’t mirrors but complements, constellations that burned side by side.”
This was the absolute best way to conclude the Letters of Enchantment duology. 👏 I sung high praise for book 1, Divine Rivals, even going so far as to proclaim it my favorite book of 2023 (I read 114 total). It was so satisfying and I honestly had no idea where the ending was going! The typewriters still had a very important place in the storyline (thank goodness!) and small handful of new characters made their way in as well.
What I love about Rebecca’s writing is the intentionality behind every single word. She packed so much emotion, meaning and just all the feels into this lyrical and poetic romance. I also liked how she really veered into more of the mythology of the gods and magic system in this book.
If you are new to fantasy, then this duology here will be my top rec for you to dip your toes in! It’s not overly complicated with the world building and has cozy early 19th England vibes imo. Plus, I only sobbed about two times. 😅
... Read moreOkay, let's dive a little deeper into why the 'Letters of Enchantment' duology, especially 'Ruthless Vows' by Rebecca Ross, has captured so many hearts, including mine! First off, can we talk about the *covers*? The OCR mentioned the 'UK Covers' for 'Divine Rivals' and 'Ruthless Vows,' and they are absolutely stunning. Each cover perfectly encapsulates the ethereal, war-torn yet romantic atmosphere of the books. I remember seeing them for the first time and just knowing I had to pick them up. They really draw you into the world before you even read a single word, hinting at the magic and intense emotions within.
For those wondering about the *genre*, this duology is a brilliant blend of YA Fantasy and fantasy historical fiction. Rebecca Ross truly excels at weaving together a rich historical backdrop – think those 'cozy early 19th England vibes' but with a fantastical twist – alongside a compelling magic system and a war between gods. It's not overly complicated, which makes it super accessible even if you're new to fantasy, as the original review mentioned. The way she incorporates the mythology feels so natural, adding layers to the world without overwhelming the reader. It’s truly a masterclass in world-building that balances epic scope with intimate character moments.
And speaking of characters, the journey throughout the 'Letters of Enchantment' duology is nothing short of breathtaking. From the first book, 'Divine Rivals,' setting up such a unique premise with the magical typewriters and the war correspondent setting, to the 'epic finale' that 'Ruthless Vows' delivers, you become so invested in the protagonists. Many search for 'who dies in Ruthless Vows,' and while I won't spoil any plot points, I can assure you that Rebecca Ross doesn't shy away from high emotional stakes. The book is indeed 'incredibly emotional' and 'devastatingly romantic,' as the image overlays perfectly described. Every decision feels weighty, every reunion is earned, and the sacrifices made will absolutely tug at your heartstrings. The ending provides such a satisfying conclusion to the overarching conflict and the personal growth of the characters.
If you've heard whispers of 'Twisted Vows' and are a bit confused, let me clarify: the book we're all raving about is 'Ruthless Vows,' the powerful second installment in Rebecca Ross's 'Letters of Enchantment' series. It’s important to get the title right because you don't want to miss out on this incredible reading experience! This duology has truly set a new standard for me in fantasy romance, delivering lyrical prose and a story that stays with you long after the last page. It’s a series that I find myself constantly recommending, and I truly believe it's a must-read for anyone looking for a deeply felt, beautifully written fantasy. The intentionality behind every word, as noted in the original review, is palpable, making it a truly immersive and unforgettable read.
