Book Review of First Time Caller

First Time Caller

Author: B.K. Borrison

Genre: Romantic Comedy

A fun and engaging romance! I absolutely loved the radio show setting, it added such a unique touch to the story. The cuts to “live radio” were seamlessly placed, making the audio feel fully immersive. I especially appreciated the little “radio click” sound effect,so satisfying. It enhanced the listening experience!

One of my favorite aspects was the portrayal of a healthy co-parenting relationship, which felt realistic and refreshing to see in a romance.

However, I struggled to connect with the MMC, and the repeated lack of communication made it hard to fully get behind their relationship. The miscommunication trope is truly my least favorite, and I found it hard to look past it. 😩

While it wasn’t a perfect fit for me, I still enjoyed the concept! Overall, I give this read 3 stars ⭐️

... Read moreAfter sharing my initial thoughts on B.K. Borison's 'First Time Caller,' I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what makes this romance novel tick, especially for those curious about its unique elements and whether it's the right read for you. It's truly a contemporary romantic comedy that brings a fresh spin with its unique backdrop. One of the standout features, as many readers and the cover art with its headphones suggest, is the immersive radio show setting. The way the story cuts to 'live radio' makes you feel like you're right there, listening in on the characters' lives. The little 'radio click' sound effect on the audiobook version is a delightful detail that really enhances the experience, making it feel incredibly authentic and engaging. If you're an audiobook lover, this one is definitely worth checking out for that unique production quality. Speaking of characters, the story centers around a single mom, a detail that brings a refreshing layer of realism and relatability to the protagonist. One of my favorite aspects was the portrayal of a genuinely healthy co-parenting relationship, which is something I always appreciate seeing more of in romance novels. It adds depth and shows a different side of navigating relationships and family life. From the book's aesthetic, which often features elements like a wallet, AirPods, and a Kindle, it paints a picture of a busy, modern life, perfectly encapsulating the vibe of a single mom juggling her career as a radio host and personal life in a vibrant city like Baltimore. Now, let's talk about the tropes. While 'First Time Caller' offers many delightful elements, it prominently features the miscommunication trope. Personally, I find this one of the hardest tropes to get past. It often leads to frustrating back-and-forth, and in this case, I found myself struggling to connect with the male main character (MMC) because of his repeated lack of communication. This definitely echoed the 'not a fan of the MMC's behavior' sentiment I've seen pop up. It’s an unpopular opinion for a popular book, but for me, it made it harder to fully root for their romance to blossom. Many curious readers often ask about the 'spicy chapters' or 'spicy scenes' in romance novels. 'First Time Caller' falls more into the 'sweet to medium heat' category. It focuses more on the emotional connection and the witty banter inherent in a romantic comedy, rather than explicit content. So, if you're looking for a romance that prioritizes charming interactions and character development over high heat, this could be a good fit. For those who enjoy B.K. Borison's writing, you might also be familiar with 'Long Time Listener,' which is part of the same series. Exploring the author's other works can give you a better sense of their style and world-building. Overall, while 'First Time Caller' wasn't a perfect 5-star read for me due to certain tropes, its unique setting and refreshing take on co-parenting make it a memorable entry in the world of romantic novels in English for adults. It's a charming listen, even if the romance itself didn't entirely win me over.
