Sun safety is extremely important during cancer treatment because many treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can make skin highly sensitive and more vulnerable to UV rays. Photosensitivity increases the risk of burns, irritation, and long-term skin damage, making proper sun protection essential for cancer patients. To minimize sun exposure risks, it is advised to limit time outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s rays are strongest. Wearing protective clothing including wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, and long sleeves helps shield sensitive skin. Regular application of broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is vital, with reapplication every 2 hours or after sweating or swimming. Hydration and consulting with your healthcare provider about safe sun practices tailored to your treatment plan are also important steps. Awareness about specific treatment areas that may be particularly sensitive can help patients take extra care. Taking these precautions not only prevents painful sunburns but also supports overall skin health during the vulnerable phase of cancer treatment. By following these sun safety measures, cancer patients can significantly reduce the risk of UV-related skin damage and maintain comfort throughout their treatment journey.
