Residency advice

2025/1/27 Edited to

... Read moreResidency is an exhilarating, challenging, and often overwhelming journey. While the initial 12 tips are truly golden, I've found that applying them deliberately and expanding on certain areas can make all the difference once you're in the thick of it. The question of "what do you do during residency" extends beyond clinical duties; it's about how you manage your life around those duties to sustain yourself. For instance, those simple tasks like putting bills on autopay aren't just about convenience; they're about reducing mental load when you're already exhausted. Similarly, utilizing a grocery delivery service might seem like a luxury, but it's a lifeline that saves precious hours, ensuring you eat something other than hospital cafeteria food. Prioritizing an exercise routine and carving out time for self-care – even just 15 minutes of quiet reflection – is non-negotiable for mental resilience. And honestly, finding a therapist BEFORE you think you need it is preventative mental health that every resident should consider. Let's talk about leveraging technology. While some residents might be looking for "best apps for psychiatry residents," many digital tools are universally helpful. Beyond medical knowledge apps like UpToDate or Epocrates, consider apps for sleep tracking, mindfulness (like Calm or Headspace), or simple task managers. These aren't luxuries; they're essential for optimizing the precious few hours you have outside the hospital. They help free up your cognitive load so you can focus on critically thinking, like "always asking why at work" and mastering your craft rather than worrying about logistics. Residency also demands continuous learning and, for many, engagement with research. Queries about "journal impact factors," like for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, highlight this academic component. You won't always have time for deep dives into every article, but dedicating a few minutes each week to browse key journals or major review articles is vital. Many institutions provide free access to extensive databases. Remember the OCR tip: "you’ve paid a lot of money to get here. Learn as much as you can." This extends beyond direct patient care to understanding the evidence base. The ability to "look at your own images" and critically evaluate data is a skill honed by understanding research. And sometimes, "less is more" when it comes to information overload – focus on high-yield, evidence-based practices. Beyond the day-to-day, residents face various assessments and milestones. Whether it's an "eligibility assessment" for a specific subspecialty certification (like an ACLP) or preparing for board exams, these loom large. My advice? Don't let them sneak up on you. Break down your studying into manageable chunks. Find study groups – "cover for your friends, they'll cover for you" applies here too! Sharing resources and quizzing each other makes a huge difference. Remember the bigger picture: "You'll be ok. It'll be worth it. You have so much to look forward to." Every assessment, every long night, is a step towards becoming the physician you're meant to be. This also reinforces the importance of foundational skills, like always being thorough when you "ALWAYS take your own history & exam," because those fundamentals are tested repeatedly. Ultimately, residency is a marathon, not a sprint. It's about finding tiny pockets of joy and fiercely protecting your well-being. These additional thoughts, layered with the core advice like prioritizing self-care and supporting your peers, are what truly helped me survive and, dare I say, thrive. Stay curious, stay kind to yourself, and never forget why you started.
