Google Play Books Partner Center Basics 🫶

If you want your book discoverable on Google Books and (optionally) for sale on Google Play, the place you manage that is the Google Play Books Partner Center.

What the Partner Center is (and isn’t)

IS: your dashboard to submit books, upload EPUB/PDF, set prices, manage sales territories, and view analytics/reports.

IS NOT: the same thing as uploading an ebook to your personal Play Books library (that’s private). Partner Center is for publishing/distribution.

It's not just a place to dump your book; it's a comprehensive platform for managing your ebook's entire journey from upload to sales. One of the first things I learned is the importance of checking eligibility. You need to be in a supported country for seller sign-ups to access the Partner Center. Getting your account set up properly is the foundational step, ensuring you're ready to proceed with publishing your ebooks. After setting up, adding your book is straightforward. I always go to 'Book Catalog' and use a template. You'll choose between using an ISBN or a Google book ID – both work, but ISBNs offer broader industry recognition. Filling in the metadata correctly is crucial for discoverability. Your title and description are obvious, but don't overlook genre selection. Google recommends using BISAC codes, and I try to choose up to three relevant ones to help readers find my work. Adding all contributors, from authors to editors, gives your book a professional touch. For the actual book files, Google Play Books Partner Center primarily accepts EPUB or PDF for ebooks. I've found EPUB to be generally preferred for reflowable text, offering a better reader experience on various devices. For covers, typical image formats like JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or even PDF are accepted. A neat feature I appreciate is the ability to add content reviewers, allowing trusted individuals to preview your book before it goes live, catching any last-minute issues. This has saved me from embarrassing typos more than once! Once everything is uploaded and metadata is complete, the 'Publish' step involves a final review. I always double-check everything – metadata, files, and especially pricing. Google typically processes publishing within 24 hours, which is quite fast. Crucially for indie authors, setting up payment profiles and linking your bank account is essential. This is where you determine your sales territories, deciding which countries can buy your book and how you'll get paid. Google's revenue share for ebooks is generally competitive, and it’s something to factor into your pricing strategy. While specific percentages can vary and are detailed within your Partner Center account, I've found it to be a fair deal for reaching a massive global audience. Finally, don't miss the 'Analytics' tab. This is where you can track your book's performance, viewing sales by earnings or units. You can filter by title, format, country, and date range, which helps immensely in understanding your audience and identifying top-performing titles or geographies. It’s a goldmine for marketing insights! Regarding age group options, while not explicitly highlighted in the main steps, the metadata section allows for specifying target age ranges (like 0-5, 6-8, 9-12), which is particularly useful for children's books or YA. This helps Google categorize your book accurately and reach the right readers.
