When You Become The Avoidant

Breakups/divorces hurt. I have spent my life mending a broken heart so I REALLY get it. Take your time to grieve and then gather the lessons. Every heartbreak, every failed connection is an opportunity for you to go within and put you that much closer to what you really want. Grieve the ending but do not let it consume you. When we fail to learn, the lesson just repeats itself.

... Read moreExperiencing heartbreak can often lead individuals to develop avoidant attachment behaviors as a protective mechanism. This pattern, known as avoidant attachment, manifests as a tendency to emotionally distance oneself from partners to avoid vulnerability and prevent future pain. Recognizing this trait is crucial for personal growth and healthier relationships. Avoidant attachment often arises from past experiences where emotional needs went unmet or from repeated heartbreaks that caused emotional withdrawal. When you become the avoidant, you might find yourself suppressing feelings, pushing partners away, or resisting intimacy, even when you desire connection. These behaviors can hinder forming secure, fulfilling relationships. Healing from avoidant attachment involves allowing oneself to grieve the pain of past relationship failures fully but not letting that sorrow consume your identity or future opportunities. Take the time to reflect inwardly and gather vital lessons that facilitate emotional awareness and resilience. Engaging with intentional practices such as mindfulness, therapy, or relationship coaching can foster conscious love, helping break the cycle of anxious and avoidant patterns. Conscious love encourages vulnerability, self-compassion, and communication — foundational elements for overcoming avoidant tendencies. Understanding the dynamics between anxious and avoidant attachment styles can also deepen insight. While anxious partners seek closeness, avoidant individuals often retreat. Awareness of this interaction can guide both partners towards healing and connection. Ultimately, turning heartbreak into a transformative opportunity requires commitment to self-discovery and emotional healing. Embrace the lessons, seek support if needed, and allow yourself to move closer to the relationships you truly want and deserve.

Avoidant vs. Anxious — and the pain no one talks
