Why motherhood feels so overwhelming (and what actually helps)

There was a moment I remember so clearly.

Nothing big had happened.

No chaos. No meltdown. No disaster day.

But I was standing in my kitchen… and I just felt done.

Not physically tired (though I was that too).

But mentally… completely maxed out.

I had already:

– planned meals

– remembered appointments

– kept track of routines

– answered questions

– made decisions all day long

And yet, my brain was still going.

Thinking about tomorrow.

What I forgot.

What I should be doing next.

That’s when it hit me.

It’s not just motherhood that’s overwhelming…

it’s the mental load of it.

The invisible list that never ends.

The constant responsibility of holding everything together.

And for the longest time, I thought the answer was to try harder.

Be more organized.

Be more productive.

Be better.

But that only made it heavier.

What actually helped?

I stopped trying to manage everything in my head.

I started creating simple systems instead.

Routines that repeat so I don’t have to rethink everything every day.

Writing things down so my brain can rest.

Letting “good enough” be enough.

And slowly… the weight started to lift.

Not because life got easier—

but because I wasn’t carrying it all alone anymore.

That’s what I share inside The Simplest Nest — simple systems and gentle rhythms that support real motherhood, not perfect motherhood

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately…

It’s not because you’re doing it wrong.

It’s because you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

You don’t need to do more.

You just need a little more support 🤍

✨ I share more realistic routines and simple systems on my website—come find what works for your life.

... Read moreMotherhood often feels like a delicate balancing act, and it’s the constant mental load—keeping track of endless to-dos, remembering appointments, managing routines, and making countless decisions—that gradually wears you down. From my experience, the invisible weight arises not from physical exhaustion but from mental overdrive. The key to managing this isn’t trying harder or doing more but shifting how you handle the daily responsibilities. One effective strategy is to create repeatable, simple systems that reduce the need for constant mental effort. For example, establishing consistent meal plans and routines frees up brain space because you no longer have to reinvent the wheel each day. Writing things down—whether on paper or digital apps—acts as an external brain, helping you offload reminders and plans. This simple act can bring a surprising sense of relief and clarity. An important mindset shift that helped me personally was granting myself permission to let "good enough" be truly enough. Motherhood doesn’t have to mean perfection. Trying to control every small detail often adds more stress rather than reducing it. Accepting imperfections and giving yourself grace can lighten the invisible load. Additionally, remember that seeking support—whether from partners, family, or community—is crucial. No one should bear the mental load of motherhood alone. Sharing responsibilities and asking for help can ease the pressure significantly. Ultimately, motherhood’s overwhelm isn’t a sign of failure but a reminder to prioritize mental rest and practical, sustainable routines. Creating gentle rhythms that fit your unique life helps you manage the mental load without sacrificing your wellbeing. These approaches have transformed my days from feeling maxed out to manageable, and they might do the same for you.
