Okay, so I just HAVE to share more about my trip to Black Mesa State Park in Oklahoma – it's an absolute gem for anyone who loves the night sky! You know how hard it is to find truly dark skies these days? Well, Black Mesa is certified as an International Dark Sky Park, and let me tell you, it lives up to the hype. When I first started planning my trip, I was mostly focused on the hike to the highest point in Oklahoma (which, by the way, is totally worth it for the views!), but the stargazing turned out to be the real showstopper. If you're thinking of going, here are a few things I learned that might help you make the most of your Black Mesa night sky adventure. First off, timing is everything. Try to plan your visit around a new moon – that's when the moon's light won't wash out the fainter stars. Check a lunar calendar before you go! Also, aim for clear, cloudless nights, obviously. I went in the fall, and the air was crisp, and the sky was incredibly clear. Winter can be great too, but bundle up! What should you bring? Definitely a red-light flashlight! White light can ruin your night vision for up to 30 minutes, so a red light helps preserve it. A comfy camping chair or blanket is a must, because you'll want to spend hours just gazing up. If you have binoculars or a small telescope, bring them – even a basic pair of binoculars will reveal so much more than your naked eye can see, like Jupiter's moons or closer views of the Milky Way. Don't forget warm layers, even if it's warm during the day; desert nights can get chilly. Snacks and water are always a good idea too. Finding a good spot once you're there is pretty easy. The park is designed for this! Just find an open area away from any residual lights (though there are hardly any). Be mindful of others who might be stargazing – keep your car headlights off once you've parked, and use your red light sparingly. I can honestly say that seeing the Milky Way stretch across the sky, so vibrant and clear, was an unforgettable experience. It truly puts things into perspective. Combining a day hike to the Black Mesa summit with a night of stargazing gave me the best of both worlds. The elevation gain on the trail makes you appreciate the landscape even more, and then seeing that same landscape under a blanket of a million stars is just magical. If you're looking for an authentic dark sky experience, Black Mesa State Park should be at the top of your list!
