The Surprise in Adobo 🌿Many commercial Adobo seasonings, including those from Goya, contain tricalcium phosphate—a synthetic anti-caking agent. Though it's generally considered safe, I've grown to prefer more natural ingredients in my family's meals, just like my abuela used to make.🫶🏽🇵🇷

The Truth Behind Sazón's Vibrant Colors 🌈 Sazón brings that perfect pop of color and flavor to our food, but at what cost? The use of artificial colors like Red 40 can be concerning, linked to health issues and particularly problematic for those with sensitivities. It’s a tough pill to swallow for someone who has cherished these flavors all her life.

It not only keeps our beloved Latin dishes vibrant and delicious but also gives me immense peace of mind knowing exactly what’s nourishing my family. When I first started looking into what was really in those familiar packets and shakers, I was genuinely surprised. We often just assume our spices are, well, *just spices*. But learning about things like Tricalcium Phosphate – an anti-caking agent that, while generally safe, isn’t something I want in my food if it’s not truly necessary – or the controversial Red 40 artificial dye in Sazón, linked to various sensitivities, really opened my eyes. It made me realize that while tradition is important, our health comes first. This quest for healthier options led me to explore making my own, ensuring pure, unadulterated flavor. One of the biggest game-changers for me has been diving into making my own Adobo and Sazón blends. It’s simpler than you think and ensures you're getting just pure, flavorful spices – no more worrying about unnecessary additives. Think of it as reclaiming your kitchen pantry! My Go-To Homemade Adobo Blend (Puerto Rican Style): For a batch that lasts a while and delivers authentic flavor, I typically mix: 2 tablespoons garlic powder 2 tablespoons onion powder 1 tablespoon dried oregano (the Puerto Rican variety, if you can find it, makes a big difference!) 1 tablespoon turmeric (adds a lovely earthy note and a hint of natural color, plus it's a great anti-inflammatory!) 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon sea salt (or adjust to your preference – this is where you control sodium!) Optional: 1 teaspoon ground cumin for an extra layer of depth. Just combine all these wonderful spices thoroughly and store them in an airtight jar. This blend is fantastic for seasoning meats, poultry, pescado (fish), and even roasted root vegetables. It gives you that classic Adobo flavor without any of the questionable extras. Crafting Your Own Sazón (The Natural Way!): That beautiful, vibrant color and distinct savory flavor of Sazón can absolutely be achieved naturally! Here’s what I use for a batch that rivals any store-bought packet: 2 tablespoons ground coriander 2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon annatto powder (also known as achiote) for that characteristic golden-red hue. This is your natural color secret weapon! 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon sea salt (again, adjust for your taste and needs) Combine these fragrant spices, and you’ve got a vibrant, aromatic Sazón that’s completely free from artificial dyes like Red 40. It’s perfect for flavoring rice dishes, beans, hearty stews, and anything that needs that unmistakable Latin pop! Beyond making your own, I’ve become a diligent label detective. While discovering brands like Loisa has been a fantastic find for me, always remember to turn over those spice jars!
