... Read moreLiving with Tourettic OCD is a daily journey filled with unique challenges and coping mechanisms. One aspect that stands out is the presence of premonitory urges—intense sensations that signal an impending tic or compulsive behavior. For me, this often feels like an overwhelming need to tap my hand a specific number of times, in a particular way, to alleviate escalating anxiety and prevent catastrophic thoughts like someone getting hurt or bad things happening. This compulsive tapping is not just a simple habit; it’s deeply tied to my sense of safety and control. Growing up with this condition, my family became accustomed to these rituals, often participating to help soothe my panic. However, such behaviors can be socially isolating and misunderstood by those unfamiliar with Tourettic OCD. It is not merely a quirk but a complex manifestation of overlapping symptoms from OCD and Tourette’s that can severely impact quality of life. To manage these symptoms, I incorporate several strategies. One significant aid is the use of a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine, which I often wear to help reduce muscle pain related to a severe disc injury but also find it calms some physical tension associated with tics. Applying Biofreeze prior to sitting down helps diminish discomfort and makes it easier to focus on the things I want to share or accomplish. Acknowledging and accepting neurodivergence has been pivotal for me. It’s important to recognize that the way our brains work can lead to behaviors that others might not understand, but it’s part of who we are. Sharing my experiences openly, whether through videos or conversations, helps raise awareness and builds community among those who live with similar conditions. It also encourages empathy from others, making social interactions less stressful. If you or someone you know experiences similar symptoms, remember that you’re not alone. Seeking support from professionals familiar with both OCD and Tourette’s is crucial. There are therapies tailored to cope with both tics and compulsions, and sometimes combining them is necessary. Finding tools and routines that work for your unique needs can improve daily functioning and mental well-being. Living with Tourettic OCD is definitely challenging, but with understanding, practical strategies, and support, it is possible to navigate life meaningfully while embracing neurodiversity.

OCD is annoying. It started with me as germaphobia when I was a child. My teacher faced my desk towards the classroom sink because I got up to wash my hands every 2-5 minutes. We had hand sanitizer on my desk. My hands were always raw. It was rough. I have adhd as well and my OCD has gotten a littl

Life with OCD and depression.
I feel like theirs a stigma around the fact that when you look better it means you are doing better. The reality is, living with mental illness is never easy. I don’t think there hasn’t been a day in my life that OCD has not impacted me in some way. If it isn’t one, it will certainly be the other.
