When I was in junior high, I faced a particularly difficult situation during a game called "Dead Man" or "Graveyard" — where the goal was to remain completely still, as if dead, while one person tried to catch anyone who moved. For someone with motor tics, this was almost impossible. My tics compelled me to move involuntarily, and trying to suppress them just wasn’t a good idea; it would cause discomfort or even pain. As a result, I was always caught early in the game and felt isolated because others didn’t understand why I struggled to stay still. I hadn’t yet shared my diagnosis of Tourette's with my teachers or classmates, so they just thought I was bad at the game. This experience highlights how common social activities can unintentionally exclude those with neurological conditions when others are unaware of these challenges. It’s important for educators and students alike to foster understanding and inclusivity by recognizing that conditions like Tourette’s involve involuntary tics that aren't easily controlled. On a personal note, sharing my story with others has helped build empathy and awareness around Tourette’s Syndrome.
