Why yoga thoughts are like fossil fuels…

This concept is so so important for people to understand in sustainability: we CAN do something, but we can’t expect ourselves to opt out of everything and make every “perfect” choice. It’s not realistic to expect that of yourself in world *built around fossil fuels*, and it’s not fair to ask yourself (or others) to fully reject fun, travel or ease.

👉One example, with Black Friday coming up: You can order from Amazon from when you have to, but try to prioritize shopping from small businesses *most* of the time. (More on that coming soon.)

Thanks to @heal with me 🌙 for inspiring this with her class on resetting your nervous system.🧘‍♀️

... Read moreMany people striving for sustainability feel pressured to make flawless eco-friendly choices, but this mindset can be overwhelming and discouraging. Thinking of our habits and thoughts like fossil fuels highlights that some outdated or ingrained ways of living are deeply embedded and hard to fully eliminate overnight. Instead, practicing self-compassion and acknowledging the complexities of our modern world can help us progress sustainably without guilt. In real life, total rejection of conveniences such as travel, online shopping, or enjoying leisure activities is neither practical nor fair to ourselves. Rather than aiming for perfection, small consistent steps—like choosing small businesses most of the time—can create meaningful impact over time. For instance, during high-shopping seasons like Black Friday, it is perfectly okay to order essentials from major platforms like Amazon when necessary but shifting the majority of shopping to local or small business sellers supports sustainability and local economies. Additionally, the mental side of sustainability is important. Practices that reset and calm the nervous system, such as those introduced in mindful movement or restorative classes, can reduce stress often tied to the guilt of not being perfectly green. Slowing down to allow your mind to be blank helps break the constant pressure of doing 'one perfect thing' and encourages a more sustainable lifestyle mindset. Ultimately, sustainability is not a strict checklist but a nuanced journey. It requires going against societal norms fueled by plastics and fossil fuels while allowing ourselves grace. By embracing this realistic, non-stressy approach, we can create lasting habits that benefit the planet and our well-being. Follow communities and creators who promote sustainable living with an authentic, relatable voice for continued support and practical advice.
