Propagating my Easter Cactus

2025/9/11 Edited to

... Read moreSo you've successfully taken some 'dippings' from your 'original plant' and are ready to grow even more beautiful Easter Cacti – that's awesome! I absolutely love expanding my plant collection this way, and it’s so satisfying to see those little 'cuttings' turn into thriving plants. When is the Best Time to Propagate? From my experience, the best time to propagate your Easter Cactus is in spring or early summer. This is when the plant is actively growing, making it much easier for your 'cuttings' to develop strong 'roots'. I've tried it at other times, but the success rate definitely drops outside of the growing season. It’s all about giving those new babies the best start! Taking Your Cuttings: A Closer Look When you're gathering your 'cuttings', you want pieces with at least two to three segments. I always aim for healthy, plump segments, avoiding any that look shriveled or damaged. After making a clean cut (I use sharp, sterilized scissors), it's crucial to let them 'callus over' for a few days – usually 2-5 days is enough, depending on your humidity. This step is super important to prevent rot once you plant them. I just leave mine on a dry paper towel in a spot away from direct sun. This initial step is definitely key for successful 'propagation'. Rooting Your Easter Cactus Cuttings There are a couple of ways I've found success in getting those precious 'easter cactus roots' to form. Soil Method (My Go-To): Once your 'cuttings' have callused, I stick them upright into a well-draining potting mix. A good mix for succulents and cacti, often with perlite or pumice, works best. You can gently mist the soil every few days, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to rot. Some people swear by a 'golden liquid composition' which usually refers to a rooting hormone. I've used rooting hormone powder sometimes, especially if I want to speed things up, but I've also had plenty of success without it. Just dip the callused end into the hormone before planting! Water Method: While not my primary method, you can also root 'easter cactus cuttings' in water. Just place the callused end into a small jar of water, making sure only the bottom segment is submerged. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh. You'll start to see 'roots' form in a few weeks! Once they're an inch or two long, you can transfer them to a 'little pot' with soil. I find this method a bit more prone to rot if you're not careful, but it's exciting to watch the roots grow! Caring for Your New Pups & Repotting Once your 'cuttings' have developed a good root system (this can take several weeks to a couple of months), it's time to treat them like new 'cactus pups'! If you started in water, transfer them carefully to a 'little pot' with cactus/succulent soil. If you started in soil, you might notice new growth appearing, which is a great sign those 'easter cactus roots' are established. When 'repotting easter cactus' pups, choose a pot that's only slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta pots are fantastic because they help wick away excess moisture. Make sure your 'little pot' has drainage holes! Water sparingly after 'repotting' and gradually introduce them to brighter, indirect light. Remember, these babies are still fragile! With a little patience, you'll have a whole new family of Easter Cacti to enjoy or share.
