I thought I was helping my marriage by being the more spiritually mature spouse. In reality, I was making my husband feel small.
God had to humble me and remind me that my role isn’t to make my husband feel inadequate, but to honor and encourage him.
“Let the wife see that she respects her husband.” Ephesians 5:33

When I first realized I was spiritually more mature than my husband, I thought it was my duty to lead him, expecting that it would naturally strengthen our marriage. However, I learned that projecting this superiority only made him feel inadequate and pushed him away. Instead, I found that true growth in our relationship came when I shifted my attitude from trying to “fix” him to genuinely honoring and encouraging him. This experience highlights the importance of humility and respect in marriage, especially when one partner feels they are more spiritually advanced. Ephesians 5:33 says, "Let the wife see that she respects her husband," which became a guiding verse for me. Respecting your spouse doesn’t mean ignoring your own spiritual journey, but rather walking alongside them in love and support. From my journey, I’ve discovered practical ways to nurture this balance: listening more, asking questions about their faith experience, and celebrating their victories no matter how small. This approach helped open up communication and created space for deeper connection and mutual growth in our faith. If you find yourself in a similar position, consider focusing on encouraging your spouse’s strengths and honoring their unique relationship with God. Share your own growth stories vulnerably, making it a team effort rather than a one-sided mentorship. This not only enriches your marriage but also strengthens your spiritual bond. Spiritually mature wives can positively impact their marriages by choosing encouragement over criticism and humility over pride. These principles transformed my marriage and I hope they provide encouragement for those walking a similar path.
