🧡🧡🧡🧡ADHD Awareness Month 🧡🧡🧡

I am someone who wasn’t diagnosed until 28. This was after my oldest was diagnosed at the age of 5. I had every symptom on this list. I thought all my struggles due to depression. When I got the results back everything made sense and my mind was blown. People fail to realize that ADHD is more than being unfocused or hyperactive. It’s the reason why I can never go to the grocery store for just one thing. It’s the reason why I am by nature a very rational methodical person until impulsivity steps in. It’s the reason why I used to call myself a perfectionist. I had the mindset that if it can be done perfectly. I don’t want to do it at all. Here we are 15 years later and I’m still struggling. Stemming from masking. I am exhausted because I try so very hard to give the impression of normality. Recently I have been focusing more on just being me. My flaws and all. To separate the disorder from the person. I am not ADHD. It is a part of me but it doesn’t have to rule me. There’s so much more to me.

If you’ve read this post and can identify with anything I’m saying you’re not alone. I thought I was but when you speak up. You’ll be surprised at how much someone else needed to hear those words. Needed to know that they don’t have to be ashamed. Let’s all walk in our truth. 🧡

... Read moreLiving with ADHD, especially when diagnosed later in life, often means navigating a complex mix of symptoms that aren't always obvious. Many people associate ADHD solely with hyperactivity or lack of focus, but as highlighted by the personal experience shared, there is much more beneath the surface. Challenges such as difficulty multitasking, getting stressed out easily, and poor time management are common among adults with ADHD. Unintentionally interrupting others and sensitivity to rejection can impact social relationships, while frequent frustration with oneself and others, intense mood swings, low self-esteem, and chronic procrastination add to daily struggles. For many, masking these symptoms can lead to exhaustion and feelings of being misunderstood. Masking refers to the effort to appear "normal" or hide one's ADHD traits, which can be emotionally draining and prevent authentic self-expression. Understanding that ADHD is part of, but doesn’t define a person, can empower individuals to embrace their strengths and vulnerabilities. Therapeutic approaches tailored for high-functioning ADHD focus on managing symptoms like impulsivity and organizational challenges. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and coaching can help develop practical strategies to improve time management and reduce stress. Recognizing and sharing experiences can also build community support, reducing the isolation often felt by those with ADHD. ADHD in women is frequently underdiagnosed because symptoms can manifest differently and may be mistaken for anxiety or mood disorders. Raising awareness about the broad spectrum of ADHD symptoms plays a vital role in early identification and support. If you identify with these experiences, know that you’re not alone. Joining supportive communities and open conversations can foster acceptance and understanding. Embracing vulnerability and acknowledging your unique challenges and strengths encourages growth and a healthier relationship with yourself.
